Slow backup Ubuntu VM's

Post by CedricD »

Hello,

We're currently testing Veeam Backup & Replication.
Everything goes well, except for 2 Ubuntu 14.04 VM's with Owncloud installed.
Storage is about 250 GB per VM.

Both VM's are installed on different ESXi 5.5 hosts on location A (500 Mbps up / 500 Mbps down)
Veeam Backup & Replication is installed on location B (10 Mbps up / 120 Mbps down)
Backup Proxy is used on location A for the backup jobs.

All other VM's backups are very fast (even for 1TB+ servers with Windows)
Backup job (it's full backup) is now running for almost 30 hours and has now reached 39%

No throtthling is set, no restrictions on backup proxies,...
ESXi hosts are not overprovisioned,...

What can be the issue?

Thanks!

Check whether the correct proxy is used for processing those VMs. What are the bottleneck stats for the jobs that back up those VMs?

Hi,

The current proxy that is used is correct.
Bottleneck = Throttling
But network throtthling is set to 75 Mbps and is currently using only 15 Mbps

Backups that ran overnight were fast.

And what is the processing stages statistics Busy: Source % > Proxy % > Network % > Target % ?

Hi,

I can't see it for the job because it's currently running.
But here are some from other VM's in the same backup job:

3/06/2015 16:33:11 :: Busy: Source 24% > Proxy 8% > Network 84% > Target 0%

It confuses me a bit. Have you made throttling rules for specified periods or for all the time?

Based on the statistics, I`m curious if there is any QoS mechanism in place on the networking equipment that limits bandwidth per connection? Also, do you have "Use multiple upload streams" field enabled?
Thanks!

Hi,

Throtthling is set for specific time periods.
Overnight, no limit is set.
In daytime, it's limited to 75 Mbps.

Use multiple upload streams is not enabled.
There is no QoS mechanism in the network .

Backups are completed.
Job 1: 6/06/2015 1:33:56 :: Busy: Source 0% > Proxy 3% > Network 85% > Target 0%
Job 2: 6/06/2015 10:08:44 :: Busy: Source 0% > Proxy 2% > Network 81% > Target 0%

Thanks for additional info. Obviously network is the bottleneck here.
Try to enable the multiple stream checkbox and see if the transmission rate go somewhere around 75 Mbps.
Thanks!
