Snapshot of Dell ME series storage
Hi Team,
Could you please advise if we can do snapshot of Dell ME4024 storage using Veeam Backup and Replication software.
ME4024 is connected to vmware esxi host through SAS cables.
Thanks,
Govi

Re: Snapshot of Dell ME series storage
Hello,
if you are talking about backup from storage snapshots, then the answer is no. Please see the list of integrated systems in the user guide
- https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... l?ver=95u4 (scroll down to buttom)
- https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... l?ver=95u4
But you can still use it for backups of VMware VMs. That's no problem.
Best regards,
Hannes

Re: Snapshot of Dell ME series storage
Hi Hannes,
Thanks for quick response, I mean to say that possible snapshot(kind of image) of entire storage including configuration of storage and data inside storage.
If storage crashes then we need to reconfigure entire storage from scratch. assigning IP address to storage and creating new volumes on storage and present it vmware esxi host.
once we have volumes and datastores created on storage, then restoration process will start which will take bit longer. If we have kind of bare metal image of storage it will save lot of time.
May be i used wrong word "snapshot" since snaphsot mostly used for vm snapshot when vmware comes in picture.
Thanks,
Govi

Re: Snapshot of Dell ME series storage
The only way to achive something similar is by storage replication/mirroring/clustering. This is a question for your storage vendor not a backup software in general.

Hello,

no, that's not in scope of any backup software as far as I know.entire storage including configuration of storage and data inside storage.
not a good idea from my point of view. If that really happens (it should never happen), then it will happen again. The root cause must be fixed before using it again. And "only" too many disks broke, you would not have enough disk space for a full restore anyway until new disks are delivedIf storage crashes then we need to reconfigure entire storage from scratch
Best regards,
Hannes

Re: Snapshot of Dell ME series storage
Hi Hannes,
Thanks for the reply.
Although we have hardisk in RAID 6 so possibility are very little( unless more then 2 hard disk fails at same time), but I was just wondering if veeam has any option to achieve this. As i know with Veeam everything is possible.
Atleast, we are aware now that this functionality is not in scope of Veeam and we can think about alternate solution or option which you have pointed in above email.
Thanks,
Govi
