Stopping QuickMigrate Job

Post by Perdesthai »

I started a quickmigrate job in Veeam Backup & Replication from one ESXi host to another but realised that the completion time would be too long and asked it politely too stop.

It obligingly changed its status to "Stopping" but otherwise seems to be carrying on as though it intended to complete the migration.

Is this normal for Veeam ? What is the quickmigration stop process ?

Can I safely kill the job, delete the snapshot on the source server and tidy up anything left at the destination?

Perdesthai,

Migration of a VM is performed in these stages:
1.Veeam Backup & Replication copies VM configuration (.vmx) to the target host and registers the VM.
2.Veeam Backup & Replication triggers a VM snapshot and copies VM disk content to the new destination.
3.VM state and changes made after snapshot creation are moved to a new location.

Probably you were on a stage of VM disk content copy. If stop the process it reverts to an initial state.
So if you kill the job, as you said, you need to delete the snapshot and clean what was copied to the destination.
Thank you.

Thanks, Shestakov.

What events take place when you right-click a running quickmigration and ask it to stop?

It certainly appeared to just carry on regardless.

As it happens Veeam resolved the question of what to do about that situation by crashing - the snapshot was removed from the source server but the partially created destination had to be manually deleted.

Perdesthai,
When you stop the job, Veeam normally deletes taken snapshot and cleans copied files on a target repository.
Since you`ve killed the job manually another Veeam protection mechanism of useless snapshots deletion worked; but, files which has been copied remained on a target host.
Thank you.
