v8 Restore speeds to VMware

Post by arjaysam »

I work for a Veeam reseller and we have just upgraded a number of clients to v8. All clients are small environments, most have one or two virtual hosts (VMware or Hyper-V) with backups going to a local QNAP NAS as a datastore although a few customers also run Backup Copy jobs to remote sites also using QNAPS. As part of our upgrade process we are testing our DR procedures and I've hit a big issue at least with restores to VMware. In testing using a simple set up (Veeam server on a Win8 laptop, datastore on USB3 disk attached to laptop, ESXi 5.1 hosted on a Dell T110 server), recovery times have been hideously slow, in the range of 10MBps or slower. Restore of a 320GB VM took approximately 10 hours. This is way, way, way slower than what we have seen under v7 using similar configuration.

I tried making the recommended "DataMover" setting changes in ESXi, no difference,. I also tried adding a Windows VM as a proxy and use HOTADD for the restore, it also did not make a difference.

The backups used were the "Backup Copies" from the remote site QNAP. There is a weekly consolidation performed by Veeam against the backups on the device (synthetic Full). Once restored the VM was fine and data was available although I did have to run the process to "fix" booting into directory recovery mode.

I have opened a case with Veeam (Case # 00697184) but I'm wondering if anyone else has seen similar behavior? Speeds have to be at least 5x slower than what I'm used to seeing on restores, perhaps even slower.

Thanks,

Robert

I've only seen (and on multiple occasions by now) users reporting up to 5x faster restore speed with hot add, which is an expected improvement... but no one reporting slower restores for sure. So, I am quite positive your issue has nothing to deal with v8. Thanks!

Robert, what if you try to upload some big file to the datastore you're restoring to using vSphere Client? What speed do you get?
