Hi,
Looking for some feedback - Veeam Backup Copy Replication vs Hardware Replication - Pros and Cons. I am in the process of upgrading out backend storage and was wondering what is a better method to replicate my backup data between 2 datacenters. Should I use Veeam Backup Copy or Storage Vendor replication? Looking for Pros and Cons . Thanks in advance.
VMware
Veeam 12.1
Physical Proxies to SAN Storage
Thanks.

Re: Veeam Backup Copy vs Hardware Replication
Hi HarrYH,
In general, use the "best" option that is fully supported by Veeam. I'm not sure what your repository storage is, but if it's Storeonce, there is support for Catalyst Copy.
The pros and cons will differ depending on the storage you're using, but in general, the constant important element for me would be that using Veeam's Backup Copy (normal backup copy or Catalyst Copy) is that Veeam is already aware of everything, so no extra steps to get the replicated storage volume online and for Veeam to be aware of the backups on it.
I can't comment on all possible steps you might need to take, but at least for a few clients I've worked with who chose their storage device's native replication, it was necessary to go through extra steps before the replicated storage volume was accessible in Veeam for restores; your mileage may vary depending on your storage, but consider how "simple" this is and if it's something you'd want to deal with during a real disaster event.
But Veeam's "awareness" of the copies via Backup Copy I think is strongest argument for Veeam is "no extra steps" to review/document/practice, if you need a restore from the copies, just start a restore.
