Hyper-V to VMware

Post by derekf »

I've just watched the "Veeam coming to Hyper-V" video.

I know it's not possible to give timescales or specific details in a public forum, however I was wondering if thoughts are being given on either backups from Hyper-V being restored to VMware or Hyper-V replicating to VMware.

Hi Derek, basically that's called V2V backups. As always, we are ready to add any feature for which there is high demand. Right now, the interest in this particular feature has been purely theoretical at most. Thanks.

HyperV to VMware

Post by mbekie »

I couldn't find an answer on the forum or maybe it's a silly question, but I was wondering if it is possible to migrate a HyperV VM to a VMware VM using VEAAM?

No, you need to use VMware Converter to perform this operation.

Hi Jason, so what's wrong with those free V2V tools provided by both VMware and Microsoft to convert each other's VMs? Thanks.

We don't have our hyperV environment up yet so I'm not familiar with the V2V tools.
I was just hoping if I use veeam for replication I could replicate from my ESX to hyperV. Same with vms backuped up with veeam that I could just tell it during the restore if it was going to a ESX host or a hyperV host. Making it a one step process.

I would like to see this too. This could allow us to lower our VMware budget but running our DR site on Hyper-V and replicating production VMware VMs over to it.

Ronny, trust me you would not want to do that. Migrating a VM from VMware to Hyper-V is complex, multi-step process with a lot of moving parts. You don't want to base your disaster recovery on such a complex process required during failover.

Besides, my understanding is that you do not have to license target hosts unless you actually run VMs on them (which only happens during source site disaster, in which case source hosts will not be running, so you can "transfer" those licenses from the source hosts to DR site hosts and thus still be compliant).

Veeam does not, but both Microsoft and VMware provide such tools for free.

[MERGED] Using Hyper-V for DR

Post by bbowers »

If I only have licenses for 3 ESXi hosts and back those up using VMware. Can I use a Hyper-V host to run backups from in an emergency or remote site that I replicate data to?

I'm not really sure how Veeam operates between the Hypervisors as I've always just used one.

[MERGED] V2V as a replica - Hyper-v to VMware

Post by oshvitzon »

hi all
sorry if its a noob question as this is my first post but i couldn't find this documented anywhere since 6.5 .
my client runs a hyper-v server with 2 VM's , i am deploying another Physical server that i want to run on vmware and that the two vm's will replicate to the new machine daily.
hopefully at the end every server will run one VM and one Backup VM for load balancing.
all i found on V2V is one time tools that convert but not something that will backup and incerement the machines.

any suggestions ?

thanks in advance

Actually it is not quite true. At the moment there's no Microsoft's tool for converting vSphere 5.1 to Hyper-V. And even if there is one, I would prefer Veeam over it. Finally both Microsoft and VMware do have backup tools also, but we are enjoying in Veeam Backup & Replication, right?

One vote for V2V

Thanks

Well, it was absolutely true at the time when I wrote this (half a year ago) :D

Also, in case you are looking to perform large scale migration from VMware to Hyper-V, ask your Microsoft representative about VMMT. This is an automated VMware migration toolkit developed by Microsoft that is based on Veeam products. Current VMMT version uses Veeam B&R 6.5, so it does support vSphere 5.1.

I have a scenario where I would like to use B&R to replicate a live Hyper-V environment to a warm DR vSphere environment - is this possible? I'm not finding anything, which suggests it isn't but I'd like to confirm.

Hi Wayne, you're correct in your assumption - Veeam does not provide this functionality. Thanks!

Is it possible to have a main datacenter/server running vSphere in NewYork and a backup datacenter/server running Hyper-V in Washington and use Veeam Backup & Replication v6.5 to backup VM's from vSphere (New York) to Hyper-V(Washington) & restore the VM's when needed (from Washington to New York)? Or do I have to use V2V-conversion tool from Acronis or Starwinds?

Thomas, you have to use V2V conversion tools for that.

Like System Center Virtual Machine Manager (Hyper-V) and vCenter Converter (vSphere)? Or are there others (you suggets)?

Yes, both tools you've mentioned can be used in this scenario for one time conversion.

Can i perform a Replication-Job to replicate a VM from a ESX to a HyperV Host?
If not, will this function be a part of further Veeam B&R Versions?

Thanks!

I too am looking to convert a VM from Hyper-V to VmWare. Currently the stand-alone converter from VmWare bombs when converting an Ubuntu 12.04 vm, which is very annoying. I went with Veeam after reading several good reviews, but now am still unable to convert a machine...
http://communities.vmware.com/message/1884331#1884331

The workarounds described in the thread above may work, after hours of troubleshooting and struggling, but aren't acceptable for my environment. Was hoping Veeam was the answer. Will be uninstalling this junk and explaining to my boss what I was doing for the last three days now...

Veeam B&R is not a solution for V2V conversion, seems that you've misinterpreted those reviews at some point. You should use tools designed specifically to address this task instead (like the ones mentioned in this thread above). Thanks.

[MERGED] Replicate from Hyper-V 2012 to Vmware 5

Post by karlochacon »

hi guys

I have a customer who has 7 VMs running right now and he wants to use our Datacenter as a Disaster Recovery Site.

I would like to know if it's possible to use Veeam Replication to replicate these VMs running on Hyper-V 2012 to a Virtual Datacenter running on Vmware 5.1

so Is It possible?
Veeam Replication is enough? For the seeding process I backup this VMs and I take them to Vmwar Site and Restore.
Which Veeam replication I should by? for Hyper-v o for Vmware?

thanks a lot

Hello Carlos, unfortunately replication between different hypervisors is not supported at all in B&R. Thanks!

Been an half year since last post. Is it now possible to backup hyper-v with veeam and restore it to esx with veeam? I mean.. you guys have both technologies... When I think logic it does not seem very difficult.. the only difference with the 2 versions is the license key.

No, corresponding conversion tools are required to do such kind of migration.
