Large environment : Repository Best practices

Post by Koobal »

Hello,
We had to backup a large Vsphere environment (about 62 Tb).
this backups will be split on 2 Backup Proxies, each one will be Backup repository too, with SAN direct access.
I have one question about the backup repositories configuration. What are the best practices for sizing disk on Repositories ?
We already calculate the space required, but my question is about the LUNs we will configure on Servers backup repositories.
Should I create a single huge LUN on each or should I create many more smaller LUN ?

Thanks for your help,
Regards

Colin, unless you have requirements to create several LUNs (due to some manageability aspects, for example), going with a single LUN is ok.

Uhm, reading at OP, there are going to be 2 different repositories, once per proxy; the only way to share a single repository between proxies is to have a dedicated repository role or use SMB and let proxies act as automatic gateways.
Colin, I just hope when you say you will create the repository storage from SAN, it's not the same SAN used for production VMs on the hypervisor.

Correct, missed that fact.

Hi,
I reassure you, repositories are not on the same SAN used for production VMs on the hypervisor.
Thanks for your answers,

Assuming the stripe size and the allocation unit is set to the largest value possible, is it recommended or supported by Veeam if I deploy large NTFS LUN with GPT instead of MBR ?

or is there any caveats in doing so with normal Repository in VBR 9.0 U1 ?
