Feature Request - backup when shared folder is online

Hi,

it would be great, when the function "Schedule - when the backup target is connected" also would work for shared folders.
In my case I have a shared folder, which is not always online. It would be perfect, when VEP backup on the target, when it is online (or e.g. VEP could wake up the backup machine).

I opened also a case (#00877163) where the technician wrote to me, that this isn't acceptable by VEP Design.

Yes, its true. I believe, support wanted to say that the backup trigger for “When backup storage is connected” event is a connection to the actual backup destination specified in the backup job settings.

But why doesn't this work for me?
I have specified the backup target (a shared folder) and I set the settings "when the backup target is connected" and "Back up no more often than every 7 days".
But now 14 days are gone and no automatic backup was started (And yes: the shared folder was often online in this time ).
When I start the backup manually all works fine.

That is the key. The event must take place to trigger backup, so if the shared folder was not disconnected – the backup is not triggered. To make sure it’s working for you try to re enable the network – such temporary disconnect will be counted as backup event.

In addition may be you need to specify the additional backup events such as at lock or logoff – to ensure that the backup is triggered more often (since you said that share folder is online most of the times)

Dima, it would be great to have a feature which will rerun the backup job when it has been failed ( because the computer was off at the backup job schedule, as example )

So far I'm very happy about VEB!

Starting the backup job automaticly when the computer boots, because the previous planned backup job has been failed.

I believe having a retry functionality should already address this feature request, right?

No. Since backup target was not available upon network state change in this job, the job will simply not start - so neither retries will be going.

In my case: VEB is installed on a server. So normaly there isn't any network disconnection or an user event (lock or logoff). The backup target is a shared folder an a client pc. The client PC is sometimes online, sometimes not.
So I have no chance to trigger VEB, to backup on the shared folder?

I think the backup should be triggered by ‘when backup target is connected event’ even in such case - Endpoint checks if the repository is reachable and network events as well. Could you test it in your environment and share the results?

I've tested it today. The backup target was 1h online. But VEP didn't start the backup process (the last backup was 9 days ago. I've started this manually).

I've opend a case two weeks ago (#00877163), where the technician couldn't help me ("this function isn't acceptable by VEP Design").
But you and Vitaly tell now me, that this should be possible.
Should I open a new one?

Unfortunately the existing logs are a bit outdated. Could you please repeat the test with the Endpoint being re connected from the NAS network and forward a new portion of logs from C:\ProgramData\Veeam to me thru any available cloud storage (i.e. dropbox or google drive)? Thank you in advance.

The backup destination was on Saturday and Sunday many hours online. But VEP didn't start the backup automatically.
I've sent you the link to the logs as PM.
In which interval checks VEP, if the backup destination is available?

Hi Patrick, our support engineer should send you a follow-up email today, however based on my understanding we check network connectivity on the computer where Endpoint is installed, but not on the target side, where destination storage is located. In your case network is never disconnected, thus backup job does not start:

As a workaround, you can try to do the following:

1. setup a daily schedule for your backup job
2. when your job fails due to destination folder nonavailability, VEB will start its retry cycle. Check out this help page for more info about retries> Viewing Information About Job Retries
