minimum number of servers to install?? and roles??

Post by tommls »

I'm quite new to Veeam, we've had Veeam plus Exagrid suggested to us...

I've read about the system requirements and the different servers..I'm confused!! :) :)

I see several possible server roles:
1) backup & replication (manages all the backups??)
2) proxy (does the actual backup work??)
3) repository (is this Veeam's word for backup destination??)
4) wan accelerator (for faster replication?? need this with Exagrid??)
5) enterprise manager (I think we don't need, each site just needs one Veeam server, not managing multiple Veeam B&R servers per site)
6) any servers or roles I left out?? :) :)

What is the minimum # of windows servers required to install with backing up about 25 Windows VMs and 2-3 Linux VMs??

Which roles can be combined within one server and which roles must be on separate servers??

All servers will be virtual Win2k12 r2 guest VMs on vSphere Essentials backing up to NFS storage or an Exagrid or other storage, replication between sites IS planned...

Thank you, Tom

Hi, Tom. A single all-in-one server is usually fine for up to a few hundreds VMs. Thanks!

OIC?? It really seems like one must set up a zillion servers. :) :)

Is the embedded SQL Express okay for that many VMs being backed up??

I'd configure it with 4 cores and would 16 GB RAM be good??
And one vNIC?? (I can't remember what the system requirements say about vNICs, the hosts themselves run the production VM network on 2 1gbE pNICs which are not taxed at all)

I'd probably schedule 4-5 separate groups of servers into separate backup jobs during the night.

Double-check: It is okay to put the wan accelerator role in with the other roles??

Thank you, Tom

Hi Tom,

check out our Userguide and our Evaluators Guide.
http://www.veeam.com/veeam_backup_evalu ... are_pg.pdf
http://www.veeam.com/veeam_backup_8_use ... are_pg.pdf

You can find a lot of information's there about our roles and implementation ways.
As well sizing is mentioned there.

SQL Express is good for a few hundred VMs. After round about 500VMs the Useriterface is a bit slower and best practice is to use a non Express Version after it.
All Veeam Roles can be on same Server when you add the required ressources.

Ressource Consumption depends on the amount of Jobs (and VMs) you process as well on the backup time window.

To Backup 28VMs s the ressources you mentioned are enough.

Again, I highly recommend to read the Userguide or to start at least with the Evaluator Guide which gives you a good overview and Screenshots for the configuration.

Happy Implementation... Andy

Thank you...I never would have thought to look an evaluator's guide.
That is a good idea to know for future products planning etc.
Thank you, Tom
