Veeam interaction with VMs

Post by tomsmi »

I'am wondering hov Veeam can change settings of VM that is backing up.
For example I have VM with one NIC connected to the same network as Veeam server. There is no DHCP service running on that subnet.
So the NIC has default addresses:

Code: Select all

C:\Users\Administrator>ipconfig
Ethernet adapter Ethernet0:
  Connection-specific DNS Suffix ..:
  Link-local IPv6 Address.............: fe80::4474:f593:a18c:4c6%12
  Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address:..:169.254.4.198
  Subnet Mask.........................:255.255.255.0
  Default Gateway.....................:
Interesting is that when I run "arp-a" i get (among other standard entries) also entry for address of veeam server:

Code: Select all

Interface: 169.254.4.198 ---0xc
Internet Address Physical Address Type
10.217.134.46 00-50-56-b6-bc-4d dynamic
My questions are:
1) Is VBR pushing those entries throughs VMware Tools into guest OS?
2) Is VBR trying to use any kind of network during restore of guest files if there is anything available (IPv6 only)?
3) What is other way for VBR to restore guest of files directly to VM when network connection is not available (through VMware tools?).

For this particular VM i was trying to restore some files. During restore process those files showed up for few seconds, then dissapeared from original folder. and at the end didn't really showed up i VM. Veeam reported success.

After successful backup of that VM i was trying

Hi,

has your VM ever been assigned an IP address in 10.217.134.* network before? Or ethernet0 is a vNIC which has never had an address in its life?

IPv6 only networks won't be used.

FLR via VIX.

Thanks.

This VM was deployed from ovf template and for sure it someday had IP address, but I do not know if it had IP from 10.217.134.* network.
How can this be important?

I can try to remove NIC from this VM and add "fresh" another one if this can help in any way.

The IP-MAC match might have been cached in an arp cache. You might want to try flushing it in order to delete stale entries.

Thank you.

Any chance those files have hidden attribute?

Ha!
This is good lead :)
by default in File Explorer view of C:\Windows\fonts folder is somehow switched to "Control Panel" layout, and not all fonts are diplayed (strange because previously I think have seen then all).
When I list in cmd contents of this folder or in File Eplorer one level up I display properties of this folder, I have alomst 500 items listed (they'e not hidden).
Thanks for clue!

Then the observed behavior could be due to the fact that attributes are applied after actual restore.
