Veeam CIFS repo and proxy selection algorithm

Post by DLMSKY »

Hello.
We have 2 sites (A, B) and link between these sites. Also we have 1 "control server" from A site, 1 "repository server" from A site and 1 "CIFS repository" from B site, a lot of veeam proxy servers: each of them is bound to a ESXi host on A and B sites.

Question: what algorithm will be used for transformation backups (merge incremental backups or creating synthetic full backups) for the CIFS repo, if we have "Automatic" in gateway server for CIFS repository?

For sample: Site A have control server and some veeam proxies in 10.0.0.0/24 network. Site B have veeamproxy servers and CIFS share in 172.16.0.0/24 network. "CIFS share" repository have setting "Automatic" in gateway server field. When merging process run on CIFS repo - control server choose veeam proxy from A site (but it's wrong, cause B site proxies is closer to CIFS). And the same time if I choose gateway server on CIFS settings from B site - all backups on B site will be made through this gateway (instead of writing directly to the CIFS repo).

Hi,

As it's described in a corresponding section of our helpcenter:
The gateway server is picked at random and per job session: Veeam Backup & Replication may use one gateway server for one job session and another gateway server for another job session.

That's a normal behaviour because VBR server cannot write directly to CIFS - a gateway server is required. The closer gateway to CIFS share you choose the better performance at backup transfrom operations you get.

Thank you.
