Linux VM backup error after vSphere 4.1 upgrade

Post by regi »

Hi

I was running vSphere 4.0 with latest update + Linux VM (VMware tools unmanaged) using Veeam 4.1.1 backup was fine
Since upgrading to vSphere 4.1 + Veeam 4.1.2 i'm having below error only on this Linux VM all other VMs are fine

Can create snapshot of this Linux VM using Vcenter no problem

Creating snapshot CreateSnapshot failed, vmRef "vm-789", timeout "1800000", snName "VEEAM BACKUP TEMPORARY SNAPSHOT", snDescription "Please do not delete this snapshot. It is being used by Veeam Backup.", memory "False", quiesce "True" Cannot create a quiesced snapshot because the (user-supplied) custom prefreeze script in the virtual machine exited with a nonzero return code.

Please help

Hi Regi,

Basically, this error states that snapshot cannot be made with VMware Tools Quiescence enabled. You may consider unchecking this option to make your job work, however, there are plenty of existing topics describing the same issue from other customers, please search the forums for those.

Thanks!

Vitaly is correct, VMware fails to create a snapshot here - this has nothing to deal with upgrade... for existing topics about this, search for "user supplied custom prefreeze script" with the forum's search (when it becomes available hmm).

Bonjour,

I have the same problem, with VBR 6.1.
I can create a quiesced snapshot with my linux VM via VBR, somites yes sometimes no, but directly in the esx console it's 100% ok.
My linux is Ubuntu server with open-vm-tools, my esx 4.0u1.
The question is why snapshots are working fine directly in esx and not via VBR ?

Ooops, my VBR version is 6.5 and not 6.1...

Do you also use standalone ESX connection in Veeam backup console or you're using vCenter Server to create snapshots?

Hi,

Either in console or vcenter.

The question Vitaliy was asking is whether you’ve added a standalone ESX(i) host to your VB&R console or added your vCenter server, instead. In other words, when the snapshot is created the communication is established between ESX(i) host and VB&R directly, or there is also a vCenter involved.

Thanks.

Ok,

This particular Vm is in a standalone ESX.

Just for the purpose of complete understanding - when you created snapshot of your VM manually using vSphere Client was the "Quiesce guest file system" option enabled?

Thanks.

Just to follow up with this...Veeam B&R doesn't create the snapshot of your VMs, instead we just send the same API call which vSphere Client does, so technically there is no difference whether you create snapshot through Veeam or via vSphere Client.

Please take a look at similar discussions that might give you a clue on what's going on: http://forums.veeam.com/search.php?st=0 ... +off+I%2FO
