Backup physical fileserver
We're using Endpoint Backup to make a backup of our physical fileserver. The total size of the data is 6 TB.
The backup itself took 16 hours, but the merge is running now for almost 50 hours! Meanwhile we're not able to start a new backup.
Is there something we can do to make the merge more faster?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Leon, what's your destination target for this backup job?

Re: Backup physical fileserver
Ok, but what's the hardware. Merge process depends on the IOPs number that your repository can provide. Was the merge process always like that or it just started to happen?

It's a Synology RS2416RP connected via iscsi to our Veeam backup server.

Re: Backup physical fileserver
Got it, in this case destination target is the bottleneck. Switching to more powerful NAS or distributing the current load on this box (if you're running regular Veeam backup job at the same time pointed to the same repository) should do the trick. Thanks for pointing out the issue though, we will see if there is anything we can do to optimize the merge process.

Thanks for your answer.
We'll try to change the schedule of the jobs so they will not run at the same time.

Re: Backup physical fileserver
Can you please open a support case and paste the case ID to this thread so I could pass it to QA team for investigation. Thanks in advance.

Re: Backup physical fileserver
Do you backup the whole system or just volume or file level backup?

Re: Backup physical fileserver
Only some volumes.
I've changed (this was a suggestion of Veeam Support) the amount of RAM of our backup server from 8 to 16 GB.
Because I also changed the content of backup job yesterday a full backup was made, so i still have to wait until the max amount of restore points i reached before a new merge will be started.
I'll keep you posted.

Re: Backup physical fileserver
Thanks for the heads up Leon. Just to be one the same page, did you try to disable backup throttling?

Yes, the option 'Throttle backup activity when system is busy' is not enabled.

Re: Backup physical fileserver
We've noticed this issue come up a lot when merging TB size files. Something specific to the Synology side of things; turn off sleep/disk hibernation. These devices can do weird things when this setting is enabled and is usually dismissed as a possible culprit.

Re: Backup physical fileserver
The merge took 10 hours! In my opinion still a long time.
We already disabled the sleep mode on the Synology.

Re: Backup physical fileserver
I wonder if you could give a test run for a backup job pointed to the local destination (maybe you have a USB drive or local drive same size as your backups)?
What Synology model are you using as backup destination and what is the current firmware? Thanks.

Re: Backup physical fileserver
It's a RS2416RP+ with firmware version DSM 6.0.1-7393 Update 1.
The Synology is now connected via iSCSI to a vm, i first want to connect it to a physical server to see if that will make any difference.
