Re: How to investigate on backup errors

Edit:
I have found logs in /var/log/veeam.
Can you help me to solve it?

My server is running on HP Microserver G7, it has two disk in raid1 (hardware mode)
Backup is mapped on a CIFS share.
When it run, it saves this error, otherwise it hangs and I have to rebbot the server (no more network connection)

Please describe the way you've configured the backup - objects to backup and backup location.

Thanks

Re: How to investigate on backup errors

Thanks a lot support,
I have installed on my Ubuntu installation.
I have set to backup the entire pc on a CIFS folder (Windows 2008 R2)
This is my last test:
2016-07-04 21:41:36 Job started at 2016-07-04 21:41:36
2016-07-04 21:41:36 Starting backup
2016-07-04 21:41:37 Creating volume snapshot 00:02:30
2016-07-04 21:44:08 Backing up BIOS bootloader on /dev/sda 00:00:01
2016-07-04 21:44:09 Backing up BIOS bootloader on /dev/sdb 00:00:00
2016-07-04 21:44:09 [error] Backing up /dev/sdb 00:00:00
2016-07-04 21:44:18 [error] Snapshot overflow.
2016-07-04 21:44:18 [error] Failed to perform backup
I have a file called "veeamsnapshotdata.0" in the root folder which is protected from deletion, now it is about 3,4MB.
Soemtimes failing backup means freezing the server....

It is a simple job:

Code: Select all

  Backup mode Job name:
     Destination BackupJob

 Backup mode
          Destination (X) Entire machine (recommended)

 Name

        > Destination (X) Shared Folder
Location ( ) VBR (not in beta)

   Name ( ) NFS
          Backup mode x (X) CIFS
          Destination
        > Location Server/Directory: server/shared/veeam
          Schedule
          Summary Domain: domain.local

                         Username: veeam

                         Password: ******

                         Restore points: 6

Backup mode [X] Run the job automatically
          Destination
          Location Daily at: 6:0
        > Schedule
          Summary [X] Sunday
                                 [X] Monday
                                 [X] Tuesday
                                 [X] Wednesday
                                 [X] Thursday
                                 [X] Friday
                                 [X] Saturday

The test on the shared folder access is ok. Username and password is verified.
Today the scheduled backup has freeze my machine.

May I ask you to archive and upload /var/log/veeam directory to a fileshare so we can review the logs? Also what kind of activity was the server performing during backup job? Any I/O intensive applications?

Thanks

Thanks a lot, here there are my logs
The serever is an Owncloud server used only by me, so not too much work on database and/or filesystem.

The logs were passed to QA, they suspect that something went wrong with the driver installation on AMD system, however we are waiting for dev-team to confirm that. I'll update this thread once we get any news.

Thanks

Thanks a lot for this esclation. I usually work remotely, but logging to console I have seen that every reboot a disk check is forced, so I think I will probably rebuild the system with a clean Ubuntu 14.04, maybe it should solve....

Hi,

We need some more info about the configuration that you use. Could you please post an output of lsblk -af?

UPDATE: QA team has confirmed that the error is related to a built-in RAID.

Thanks.

I'm having the exact same error, glad that the cause of the issue was found. Is the development team still interested in any logs?
I have the Backup Agent working on a Intel Xeon machine, running Debian Jessie 8.5 with Software-RAID-1.

The Agent also seems to be backup the mirrored drive as well the "real" drives behind that RAID, so it's eating up more space then required.

Code: Select all

2016-07-15 09:59:57 Backed up /dev/md2 24.4GB at 105.5MB/s
2016-07-15 10:03:54 Backed up /dev/sda 26.4GB at 113.0MB/s
2016-07-15 10:07:53 Backed up /dev/sdb 24.4GB at 114.5MB/s
2016-07-15 10:11:31 [error] Backing up vg 286.8GB at 118.1MB/s (15%)
2016-07-15 10:53:26 [error] Snapshot overflow.

Hi,

Yes, logs might be required, please upload them somewhere.

Did you setup RAID at OS level with some tool like mdadm, or you just got it confugured via BIOS? Also could you please elaborate on
Eating up more space than required
?

Thanks

The RAID is set up at OS level, using mdadm.

I meant, that the Agent is - for example - backing up /dev/md2, as well as the complete /dev/sda and /dev/sdb drives. But /dev/md2/ is an RAID1 array out of /dev/sda2 and /dev/sdb2. So, when I understand it right, the Agent will backup the complete data three times.

If it's mdadm then your case is different than OP's. Regarding backing up tha data twice - could you please share the logs and describe the backup job settings? Was that an Entire machine backup to a shared folder?

Thanks

I am sending you the logs via PM. Yes exactly, it was "entire machine"-backup to a share folder (CIFS share).
