Planning our Uprgrade to v9

Post by Jack1874 »

Case ID # 01849381

Guys, we are planning our upgrade to v9.

Current Config
Software: Veeam Backup and Replication ver 8.0.0.2084
Veeam Backup Server: VM, w2k12 R2
Veeam Proxy Server(s) x 3 - Physical, w2K12 R2
HP StoreOnce - firmware 3.13.3 (UNC landing zone)
HP Store Ever
vSphere 6.0 (U1) Build 3568940
HP 3PAR (Storage Snapshots)

Our plan would be to upgrade to v9, then apply Update 1. We would then follow this up with an upgrade of vSphere to 6.0 (U2).

We do have a case open, but if anyone would like to chip in with their experiences that would be great.

Before running the upgrade make sure you do backup of Veeam config database and disable all jobs schedule for the maintenance time. Once upgrade is complete, update all Veeam infrastructure components and start running your jobs again. We have the upgrade procedure outlined in the Release Notes, please take a look.

Hi,
I'm not exactly in your boat. I joined a company recently and playing catch up with older systems.
- ESXi 5.1.0 GA 799733
- Veeam Enterprise 6.5
https://www.veeam.com/kb2053

It looks like I have to upgrade twice.
6.5 to 8 and then 8 to 9.

What is not clear to me from the KBM article is:
Can I still use SQL Express or do I need a Full blown SQL server? Will the upgrade update my current DB?
Important Note Regarding Performance
Veeam Backup & Replication provides an option during installation to create a local SQL Express instance. This option is often taken and as such older versions of Veeam that are then updated may be running on old SQL Express instances. This can affect performance. It may be advised to upgrade the local SQL instance to the most current supported version after first upgrading Veeam to the latest version and update. All versions of Veeam Backup & Replication after 8.0.0.917 (Patch 1) support SQL 2014.

Hi Jeff,

You can continue using SQL Express edition, no issues with that. This note says that in some situations it is advised to also upgrade SQL Server Express to the next version (not edition).

Thanks!

Hi,
We have obtained the licensing Veeam 9 but one thing that comes to mind is...
Do I need the Veeam 8 licenses to perform the upgrade from 6.5 to 8 and then 8 to 9?
Thanks

In order to directly upgrade to version 9 you should be running you must be running version 8.0 or 7.0 Patch #4 on the supported operating system (check the System Requirements section of our user guide).

Since you're leveraging older version, you should let our support team assist you with upgrading process. Not only will they follow you through the needed steps, but also they will be able to generate required license (though, I doubt that it is needed, since you can always update in a free mode, and provide a license afterwards, once v9 is installed).

Thanks.

After upgrade is complete you can revisit all new settings for v9 to enable them, as they will be disabled by default.

I also have the same issue, but how can I get support from your team to assist me for upgrading? I can't open the new ticket for the support because my support id is expired. Could you assist me how to get a new support ID from new license renewal?

Shafiq, once you renew your maintenance (support contract), you will be able to open support cases with our team.

Thanks Vitaly for the quick response,
But just now I don't have the new support ID & the old support ID is already expired. Could you help me where I can get the new support ID? For my understanding, we need to key in the new licences to get the new support ID. After renewal, we only get new licences for the Veeam Backup & Replication ver. 9
Please assist me.

Shafiq, have you contacted renewals team already? My assumption was that support ID should be preserved upon renewal.
