Backup repository is getting low on free disk space (563,9 G

Post by t.gebler »

Case ID 00964468

We backup a Win7 Computer to a Veeam V8 2030 Build Repository Server.

The Server sends Warning with low Disk space, it ignores the global setting with 3% and 10GB. I guess its a bug and our customer sends in a ticket to us each day
Backup repository is getting low on free disk space (563,9 GB free of 9,0 TB).
Veeam Endpoint Backup 1.0.0.1954

Besides that, works awesome!

Do you see the same behavior for all other backup repositories where VMs are stored or just Endpoint backups repositories?

Tobias,
Thanks for the heads up – I’ll ask QA team to check the logs you’ve sent.

Hi, this morning all head office users (10 staff members) with end points reported low disk space warning.
As the original poster we too backup a Windows 7 64bit desktops/laptops to a Veeam Repository (QNAP)
13/07/2015 8:46:16 AM :: Backup repository is getting low on free disk space (566.9 GB free of 6.0 TB).

Only seeing this for end points.

No submitted a job ticket as yet.

This Worked for me, I guess you could push the regestry key through a GPO to your clients.

Create new DWORD values at client machine is a "HKLM\Software\Veeam\Veeam Endpoint Backup\" key BackupRepositoryFreeSpaceThresholdPercent
Set it to amount of space you want to give low space warning, in percents.
Default value is 10.

Thanks Tobias, work around for sure. Clunky workaround as we know it should read the repository settings and not be looking locally if the backup is not going there.
But workaround never the less.

Interesting that settings not even present in GUI, however early days.

Once again vielen dank!

Glad you are up and running. I see what I can do in regards to this annoying notification. Might be a good idea to disable it completely once the backup is set to VBR repository. Thanks guys!

@Dima, with all due respect disabling notifications defeats the purpose of user being informed of other errors.

The end point is not respecting the repository setting and by the registry setting this is not documented, tut tut!

I am thinking that when backing up to the VBR repository all the management should happen at the VBR side, while real end user may know nothing about Endpoint being installed on his machine. Does it make sense or regular documented setting on the Endpoint side is more welcome?

@Dima, Yes totally agree the smarts should be at VBR side. Since as you said end point user in this case does not know nor care where the data is being backed up to in most scenarios.

Reason I think this is an issue is the product primarily backs up to locally attached storage thus warning make sense, since this is first public iteration of the product then these speed bumps start to show up.
Hence it works in Veeam favor to have such a public forum to gleam real life scenarios to make a better product.

Thanks.

Hi,

I too have this issue.

My 2 cents: make the warning a bit more intelligent, I backup to a CIFS file share that is 72 TB with 5 TB free space. This make event 1% enough for my backups to succeed.

I suggest that the free space check should use actual size as well. Maybe give a warning when there is less than twice the size of the last 2-3 backups.

It’s hard to predict the change rate for every particular user: one may use computer for web browsing only, while another can copy and paste lots of photos…

Will this be changed in one of the next versions?
The user should be able to decide wether to be warned when free disk space is under a certain value in GB, or if disk space is under x%

Personally I think the only useful setting would be to set a value in GB

Hi,

We've made several improvements in latest update and it seems to be working pretty good. Of course, if you want to ignore the warnings completely or change the threshold, you can use the regkeys described in this thread

[MERGED] Veeam Endpoint warning due to low disk space

Post by ChrisGundry »

Hi,

We have a datastore that is low on disk space at 7%. We have adjusted our Veeam B&R console to warn at 6% and error at 4%. This is actually quite a lot of space still available because the datastore is very large.

The issue we have is that we have a number of Veeam Endpoint jobs that backup to this same datastore/volume and they are alerting every time they run due to the low disk space. They do not seem to use the B&R thresholds and have no settings to adjust in the VEB GUI to change this behavior.

Can someone advise?

Thanks

Hi Chris,

Indeed, VBR settings do not propagate to the VEB. You can use a special regkey described in this thread to adjust the threshold. kindly, review this thread and let us know if it helps. Cheers!

Hi Reklov,

No changes here, but the described regkey for setting the custom free space threshold is still valid.

This still hasn't been addressed in the Windows 2.0 Agent. Any chance it will be settable in the GUI sometime soon?

Hi Phil,

To clarify, you would like this option to be customizable via UI, correct?

Correct. It would useful to be able to completely turn off that warning as well. We store our Windows Agent backups on a B&R repository and that has its low space alerting handled by Veeam One.

is there any solutions available right now to disable the "backup repo space low warning" in veeam agent now? -> percentage regkey = 0??? a few posts back there was a reference to the other thread about setting the warning for the local (source) volumes... but that does not affect what we want here...

Can you please elaborate why this registry hack does not work in your case? Thanks in advance.

the "DisableVolumeFreeSpaceCheckWarning" regkey disables warning for source volume freespace warnings, isn't it?

and the "BackupRepositoryFreeSpaceThresholdPercent" regkey sets only the percentage of free space, whats a couple of times mentioned in this thread here isn't the very best option when having huge backup repositorys, since 1% can be a couple of TB! so my question was if its possible to set this key to 0% and disable the warning with it completely?

Hi all, here I got:

Replication job: Job 1 Warning
Production datastore DS-D01 is getting low on free space (452.7 GB left), and may run out of free disk space completely due to open snapshots.
However, the datastore DS-D01 with more than 1.5TB free space.

Any hint? update and solution?

Thanks a lot.

Hi guys, there is any settings / reg key to set on Veeam Backup Server to avoid alerts from Veeam Agents regarding "Backup repository is getting low on free disk space" ?

The low disk space setting on the VBR doesn't seems to apply to Veeam Agents
