create recovery media fails with WD Elements USB3 disk
Hi there,
up to now I have set up Veeam Endpoint backup on several computers, mostly it runs fine.
However, when trying to set up a new Western Digital "Elements" 2TB USB3 external drive on
my Windows 10 PC, I got an error message "unable to change disk layout" when creating
recovery media. This could be solved by changing the GUID boot record to MBR-style via
formatting on a Macbook.
Today, I tried to create recovery media on another Windows 10 machine with a 3TB WD
external drive. This time the failure message was "insufficient disk size".
Is an update planned to improve handling of external drives to be used with Veeam Endpoint?
Thanks,
Rainer

Hi Rainer,
Thanks for the feedback. Can I ask you to open a support case and share the logs with the support team? I’ll ask QA to check your logs and identify the root cause of this behavior.

I did already open a support case for the first incident. Shall I open another for the "insuffficient disk size"?
The ID was case 01953955 - create recovery media fails with new usb disk
Best, Rainer

Rainer,
Is this on another windows 10 machine? If yes, please open a new support case for that specific machine
Thanks
Mike

There will be no outcome. The debugging instructions will be to disable all non-MS software that could interfere and try again. If this fails (it will, since this appears to be an integer overflow problem) I will be left alone. After all, Veeam endpoint is a free product

Rainer,
Thanks for sharing case IDs. I’ve asked QA team to investigate, will follow up once I hear back anything.

I have to apologize. There was a solution to the 2nd case and the announcement that this be fixed in an upcoming release.
So, sorry again, my fault.
Thanks a lot, Rainer

Rainer,
No worries, glad that it worked out, and while it doesn't solve your problem today, at least there will be a fix in the upcoming release. Thanks for coming back to us!

Re: create recovery media fails with WD Elements USB3 disk
I talked with QA team. The issue in the first case was indeed caused by bad partition allocation. In several cases recovery media creation wizard can’t format the USB drive and create a recovery partition. The only way to fix it, is to use third party tools to correct the partition layout (like you did). We will keep an eye on this issue.
Second case is going to be fixed in upcoming version. The issue here is that recovery media partition cannot be allocated on the drives larger than 2TB.

Appears to happen if a drive is partitioned using GPT. You will need to change the partition to MBR.

j0hn33y,
Confirmed - recovery media requires MBR layout, so this behavior is expected.
