This is a feature request based off of my case 01818089.
I am running Dell FS7610 (Fluid System) NAS.
We need to be able to backup our NAS CIFS shares either with an NDMP solution or be able to backup mapped drives (UNC or otherwise) using Veeam.
We are currently using two backup solutions Veeam for most of our operation and Backup Exec for our NDMP backups. The only thing that Veeam will not backup is our NAS shares which is a major part of our environment.

Please add the feature to backup Dell NAS CIFS shares so we can use Veeam as our complete backup solution.

Hi fellow Veeam admins.

I love using Veeam and its by far the easiest software to use for virtual machines and now even physical machines.
I have data stored on a NAS that i am now writing directly to tape.
But as other backup admins probably find these are not the only type of data that we need to backup.
My final issue i have at the moment is we use a NetApp in cluster mode as primary CIFS storage. We SnapMirror all of the volumes to a secondary NetApp. These volumes are not accessible by browsing to them so i cant use File to Tape.

At the moment i am having to run a completely different piece of backup software (that isn't great but its not the worst i have used) and partition my library so i can backup the secondary copy of the data.
What i really would love to have is 1 piece of backup software to rule them all! and that software to be Veeam.

I would be interested how others get around the issue and also if it is an issue for others?
So basically can someone advise me on how to do this, or raise it as a feature request?

Why don't you create CIFs shares on the snapmirror target. Even though the volumes are read only, you still should be able to read from them. I don't think it needs write access, I can't remember if it needs to set the archive bit file.

Worth a test try.

If that don't work, worst case scenario (if you have some storage), is snapmirror the target to another volume and break it (you could use a one liner script daily to resync and then break..food for thought).

I am considering recommending Veeam B&R v9 to a client to replace their current backup and DR solution however they currently have a number of large VNX fileservers which are currently backed up via NDMP.

Can anyone tell me what is Veeam's best practice for backing up fileservers? (maybe Veeam can reply to this question). And how other's are backing up fileservers?

Any advise or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Sent off an email to colleagues showcasing Veeam's availability suite and competitive pricing, only to realize that we can't efficiently backup any of the CIFS shares on our NetApp FAS series SAN. Only the VM's on our FlexPod's would benefit from a robust DR plan and have some neat features.

From what I've read since yesterday, without NDMP support we cannot consider file copies or mounting the shares with a proxy VM as they won't be fast enough or reliable. No indications of v9.5 supporting NDMP either (I'll gladly be wrong!)

Some other options that COULD allow you to use Veeam would be to virtualize your shares so you can scale across (multiple Windows or Linux fileserver VM's) instead of scale up (more expensive filers and controllers etc.). Haven't really thought it through as to how it would affect tiering, or how to even manage such a change while in production. Might have to look into VTL and other options while considering Veeam solely for the VM's.

Thanks for your reply.
I would be interested to know if and how you resolve this.
One option which I am considering is to take a checkpoint of the filesystem on the VNX and mount it to a VM and then backup the VM as normal, however I will need to figure out a way to schedule the checkpoint and mounting so that it all happens in the correct sequence.

Are there any plans for NDMP backup support for any future releases of VEEAM? My company would benefit greatly from this. Probably the one thing lacking in this fine product from my perspective.

Hi all

I'm stuck for a method of creating a good backup routine for a small site we have with approx 20 users.

They currently have a physical DC which doubles as a fileserver. The plan is to replace it with a 1U pizza box to act as a DC, but have a storage device (Drobo 810n) to provide CIFS capability and move all the fileserver data across to it.

What I'm trying to figure out is how to back this data up with Veeam. The plan is to split the Drobo into two volumes, one with the active data, the second for the backup data. We don't have the luxury of an offsite replication solution as the site link is 256K. No tape devices on site.

How would I configure this on the Veeam management server. I want backup the data on a NAS to a second volume on the same NAS. I thought it would be straightforward, but I can't seem to square it away in my head how to do it.

I would recommend against keeping backups on the very same device where the data is located.

I would recommend instead of getting a NAS is running Hyper-V on the new server you are going to buy, with 1 VM as your DC and 1 VM as your file server.

Actually, ignore that, its a fair idea as a HV host launches in kernel since 2012 and doesn't need a physical DC.
