Direct SAN much slower than NBD

Post by peeky1323 »

Hi,

Case: 01976887
Wondering anyone could shed some light on the following. We have a new setup we are putting in top replace and older one. It consists of:

2x ESX V6 servers and vCenter (2x 1GB nic for VM traffic vSwitch0, 2x10GB Nics for iSCSI vSwitch1)
Dell EQL (2x 10GB NICs)
Physical Veeam Server (2NICs teamed for Production Network, 2 Nics not teamed with MPIO in iSCSI)

Production network and iSCSI network completely separate switches

With MPIO disbale I get a backup speed using Direct SAN of 400k (yes 400k)
Wiht MPIO enable I get 4MB/s
If I change to NBD I get 70MB/s

Something isn't right. The EQL has 3 interfaces, 2x10GB and 1 100MB nic for management. It's almost like it;s trying to use the 100MB nic but it shouldn't be, the iSCSI initiator on the Veeam server uses the Group IP in the iSCSI network.

I am sure it;s something simple but I have been looking at too long now to see it. IOPS testing from a VM on the ESX cluster show very good performance so it;s just Veeam -> EQL that is slow.

Any advice welcome.

Hi,

What transport mode does the job reports? Do you see "[san]" in the logs?

Thanks

Hi,

Yes if I set the local proxy to be "Auto" I get SAN and 400k. If force it to NBD then I get 70MB/s.

Thanks,

Matt

I'd continue looking into this with support. Probably involving Dell engineers would be required.
