ESXi 6.5 and vCenter 6.5 support

Post by planetcoop »

hello,

Just want to let a few vmware users know that it was out and i have updated my test cluster. I was able to update all hosts and vcenter with only a edit properties on all hosts. This was to refresh the certificate and update the Veeam 9.0U2 configuration. I have now completed several basic job tasks including a full and a restore with out issues.

Thanks for the note, Chris.

Basic stuff may work, but advanced functionality will definitely be impacted because of a few major changes in vSphere 6.5 "under the hood". It really is NOT a dot release from this perspective. For starters, it has the new VMFS version with what it seems to be very different internals (not just some minor changes and tweaks).

So, it would be wise not treat vSphere 6.5 as a minor release from the upgrade perspective. Even the fact that it took well over 1.5 years to release kind of hints that ;)

We're planning to support vSphere 6.5 in Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 1. As far as timelines for the latter, historically we needed on average 2 months after vSphere GA.

Can one move to 6.5 for vCenter only with Veeam 9.5 leaving the hosts on 6.0u2? Or will just having vCenter on 6.5 mess up Veeam? Just curious and if the answer is that it will not work I can wait. I already moved to Veeam 9.5 and am playing with vSphere 6.5 in DEV environment. Best of both worlds since Veeam doesn't back up DEV. 8)

With 9.0U2 and directly veeaming guests from the esxi hosts works well, but does not sync up with queuing the guest. I do love veeam and i also have grown to love vmfs 6... Really waiting for veeam 9.5U1, good luck team on the next release.

No vSphere 6.5 is not supported. If you are starting a backup, you will get the info that at least with update 1 for BR9.5 vsphere 6.5 will get support...

Is there any beta group to get in, to test the update 1?

No, we don't do betas for updates any longer, as we found most people tend to slap them right into production environments and this caused us too many issues.

i was refering to gostev's post... that the basic functionality may work...

i do read the post above mine but was not sure that this was a qualified answer as, "it's dead" is very common phrase... and i do wonder that it would work "basically" with 9.0u2...

Me personally, I wouldn't trust the combination of software that "basically works" in production, especially after reading such a comment from the user who has actually tried it. I'd wait a bit till the moment it just works (and supported).

I've just noticed the BE16 does support vSphere 6.5, even though it was released before 6.5.
I wonder if Veritas has included any beta software(vddk6.5?) or if all there testing is based on the beta/rtm release.

Final version of VDDK 6.5 was only made available with vSphere 6.5 GA time on Nov 15. Until then happened, only RC version was available to ISVs, and it had some major issues around new vSphere 6.5 functionality.

[MERGED] VBR 9.0 or VBR 9.5 with VMware vCenter 6.5.0

Post by Didi7 »

Hello folks,

atm we use 3 VBR 9.0 Update 2 backup servers against a vCenter 5.5.0 Update 3e and intend to switch to a vCenter 6.5.0 server appliance. Hosts are still ESXi 5.5.0 Build 3248547 or ESXi 6.0.0 Build 3620759.

Has anyone made any experiences with a similar environment? Are there any problems, when I use a vCenter 6.5.0 server appliance together with VBR 9.0 Update 2 or VBR 9.5 ?

Should I update to VBR 9.5 before running my backup servers against a vCenter 6.5.0 or should I wait until VBR 9.5 Update 1 before updating to vCenter 6.5.0 and instead use a vCenter 6.0.0 Build 4637290 temporarily?

Any thoughts are very much appreciated.

Regards,
Didi7

[MERGED] VMWare 6.5 and VBR 9.5

Post by besofakissen »

Any chance to enable basic backup functions from VBR 9.5 to VMware 6.5? Our hole farm is upgraded and theres no simple way backup.

Additionally Backups worked with VBR 9... is there any way to downgrade from 9.5 to 9?

Cheers

i read this 10 times... we tested simple backup and restore with BVR 9 to and from ESX 6.5 and it worked.

If vsphere 6.5 is not supported, why is it working on VBR 9u2... (Simple Backup and Restore not the hole function lvl)

"not supported" does not necessarily mean that it does not work.

I read many posts here in the forums, there are some people which can do backups of vSphere 6.5 with Veeam v9.5 or v9 and others cannot.

It is very dependent on the infrastructure you have in your company (or at your customer).

If i'm not wrong there is no graceful way of downgrading from v9.5 to v9. That means you have to uninstall Veeam v9.5 completely and install v9 from scratch.
Best regards,
Karl

yes I understand your point. Don't ask me! Thats only official statement.

about downgrade: If you have a 9.0 configuration backup, you can uninstall 9.5, than install 9.0 and restore conf backup.

It is advised to wait for VBR 9.5 update 1 as there are major updates in vSphere 6.5.

We do not support vSphere 6.5 with version 9.0 because we cannot guarantee reliability. And while simple backups may indeed appear to continue to work fine, it does not automatically guarantee that they are consistent and restorable.

Dear All,

When Veeam will support ESXi 6.5. Do we have an approximate date?

Running Veeam 9.0.0.1715 against Vcenter 6.5 / ESXi 6.5 with Cluster/HA and non clustered ESXi without any issue. Using Veeam 9.5 fails to connect to Vcenter.

Not sure if it matters but are you running Windows Vcenter or the appliance?
