Full VM Restore and invalid credentials

Post by xkp »

I'm testing the Veeam Backup & Replication software free Edition and i want to use it
to backup a Virtual machine from an ESXI server on a network (network1), and restore then the VM
machine on a second network (network2).
The two networks have no physical connection and are totaly differen (apart for the same ip class
192.168.0.x)
The two veeam backup & replication installations are completely indipendent.

The reason for this need is very simple: in case of a very severe physical disaster during which i lost
ALL my network1 components (including the veeam backup and replication server), i want to
be sure that all i have to do to get the machines back is to restore the vbk from my removable storage
using a completely new and fresh installation of Veeam Backup & Replication software.

Is it possible to accomplish this task in a simple way with Veeam B&R free?

I tried the following but i failed.

This is my scenario:

Newtowk1
#1 physical vsphere essential 6.0 server (named server_exs1) (to admin it i have the account:
user_esxi1/pass_esxi1)

#1 VM on the server_esx1 (named vm1) (the admin user for vm1 is:user_vm1/pass_vm1)

#1 veeam backup & replication free server server_veeam1 (to admin it i have the local account:
user_veeam1/pass_veeam1) to which i added the server_esxi1

Newtowk2
#1 physical vsphere essential 6.0 server (named server_exs2) (to admin it i have the account:
user_esxi2/pass_esxi2)

#1 veeam backup & replication free server server_veeam2 (to admin it i have the local account:
user_veeam2/pass_veeam2) to which i added the server_esxi2

I perform a backup of vm1 using server_veeam1 and save the .vbk fine on a removable storage

Then i proceed to restore the vm1 on the other network.

In order to do this on the HOME tab i click RESTORE on the toolbar.
As i click on the BROWSE and select my .vbk file, the veeam software ask me for credentials.

I have tried any credential
1)user_esxi1/pass_esxi1
2)user_vm1/pass_vm1
3)user_veeam1/pass_veeam1
4)user_esxi2/pass_esxi2
5)user_veeam2/pass_veeam2

but i always get
"incorrect username and password" error.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Filippo,

Yes, that's possible. Can you please clarify at which step exactly you're receiving a password prompt? Do you have the target infrastructure host added to the backup console when you do the restore operation?

Thanks!

Most likely you need to provide credentials to the CIFS share the backups are stored in.

Sorry for the late reply.
As a matter of fact, the backup was stored on a disk shared by another machine and already correctly mounted on the backup server.
Anyway, veeam asked again for this credential exactly at the moment i selected the .vbk and before it started to analyze the file.

So have you provided credentials to this CIFS share?

Yes, as i said what is strange is that the disk has been already mounted on the veeam backup server.

I'd appreciate if you could open a case to investigate this closer.
