[MERGED] Full Hyper-V environment to vSphere/vCenter environ

Post by migrater3000 »

Hi there!

Actually I have a Hyper-V environment with about 20 VMs on the Hyper-V Host. I backup all the VMs with Veeam.
Now, I would like to migrate to ESXi in a vCenter environment.

Is there any whitepaper, howtos or just some informations about this?
Anyone already done this? What was your experience?

This is not possible with just Veeam B&R alone. You would need some V2V conversion tools for that.

Have you some expirience with a specific tool?
So that the network configuration will not get lost?

Me personally, no. However, other users who had such experience will probably chime in.

B&R does that function. Instead, you'll find that if foreign software lets you convert a .vmdk disk to .vhd/x disk

They speak highly of V2V for example ..

Hi Guys,

Also interested to do this with B&R.
Would be nice to have a hypervisor agnostic backup utility that converts the vm's in both ways.

Alternative for this is ZERTO
It's a Virtual Replication software that replicates between hypervisor's.

Hope to have been of help for someone.

Kind Regards,

[MERGED] VMware to Hyper-V

Post by andriktr »

Hello,
In our company we have only vmware based virtual environment, but planning to completely migrate to Hyper-V. Main question is how to be with old vmware backup's without vmware infra. Is it somehow possible to restore vmware based backup to hyper-v or I need to have some vmware environment to be able to restore vm and then convert to hyper-v.
Thank you.

Andrej, you would need to use some conversion tools, there's no ability of cross-platform restores.

My first approach would be to use Disk2VHD on each VM running in the VMware environment. Manually creating the VM and attaching the vhdx in Hyper-v would be fairly easy. Be sure to power down the VMware version before starting the Hyper-V version.

There is one gotcha to be on the look out for. I recommend uninstalling any sort of VMware guest integration before creating the vhdx. I ran into a problem years ago when I converted a VMware Workstation VM to another format and the VMware Tools would not uninstall from the new guest because the uninstaller was trying to access the VMware host components via a private API and the whole install failed when the API call failed.

It also stands to reason to perform one-time backup (VeeamZIP) prior to converting VM to a different format. Just my 2 cents. Thanks.

As stated before, you can't restore VMware backups to Hyper-V virtual machines or vice versa.

However, it IS possible to use Veeam Endpoint backup for this purpose. Install it inside the source VM, create recovery media, make a backup, boot the (empty) target VM from the recovery media and restore from the previously created backup. I've done this dozens of times.

You can even restore to Hyper-V generation 2 (UEFI-based) virtual machines. This is something most conversion tools can't do (at least not the ones I used like 5nine, Microsoft VMC).

Also, you can store the backups in your regular Veeam backup repository.

If you have System Center Virtual Machine Manager, you can use that to do a V2V conversion as well. That's what I used back in the day

[MERGED] Cross-Hypervisior backup/restore

Post by ftbug »

Hi, we are currently looking to on-board a customer who is using Veeam to back up their hyper-v infrastructure. We are largely VMware based, and was wondering if files backed-up from a hyper-v infrastructure can be restored into a VMware infrastructure and vice-versa?

thanks in advance

It is not possible to import directly from Veeam to a different platform than the original as the file/VM formats are different.

Can I just confirm this is 'final' and there isn't a workaround - you say "import directly" - how about just restoring?

As per ftbug, we are looking at onboarding a customer that might be using Hyper-V, but we'd like to backup to our datacentre (and have the ability to restore to VMWare - as we use VMWare) - is there no way around this using Veeam? Would we need a Hyper-V host specifically to restore to?

Correct.

Yep, in order to backup/restore VMs similar hypervisor platform is needed.

Thanks.

It's been 6 months or so and I"m sure this information hasn't changed, but I just wanted to ask to be sure. It is still not possible to backup from Hyper-v and restore to VMware, right?
Thanks,

Re: VMware to Hyper -V

Hi Jack,

Not directly today. Although there are many possibilities to achieve this. One being restoring the VMDK files only and then do an offline P2V (many solutions out there, including free ones) to make it a Hyper-V virtual machine.

That said, there are some good conversations within the team on this specific scenario. Considering we are already supporting restore any Veeam backup to Microsoft Azure this seems (to me) a logical step. However, can you let us know (every bit of information helps in conversations) what your specific scenario and reason is?

Thanks
Mike

Nope, you cannot restore backup of vSphere VM to Hyper-V host.

Windows VM can be backed up with Veeam Agent for Windows and then instantly restored to Hyper-V host.

Thanks.
