Backup Failing - Azure Site Recovery

Post by brad126 »

We have a SQL VM that we are replicating up to Azure's Site Recovery service. Ever since we installed the "mobility service" which is needed to replicate that VM up to Azure, the on premise Veeam backup job fails.

Unable to release guest. Error: Unfreeze error: [Backup job failed.
Cannot create a shadow copy of the volumes containing writer's data.
VSS asynchronous operation is not completed. Operation: [Shadow copies commit]. Code: [0x800706be]

This Azure mobility service installs a "Azure Site Recovery VSS Provider" for it's replication, which I'm guessing is playing a role here. Anyone using a mixture of Veeam and Azure Site Recovery?

Update:

We uninstalled the Azure Mobility Service from the guest, subsequent Veeam backups are succeeding.
Initially, it appears as though ASR and Veeam don't play nicely.
I wonder if a better solution might involve an element of spinning up a VBR VM in Azure, alongside some Azure storage as a repository for VBR replica VMs...

Third-party VSS providers can indeed cause conflicts.

We having the same issue as well. Have raised a ticket with microsoft to see if there is away around this. Probable need to do same with veeam. There has to be a solution.

Did you ever get an update on this? How can we do backups and ASR DR at the same time?

We recently installed Azure AD Connect on one of our VMs that has been backing up fine for a year. Once Azure AD Connect was put on though, the backups for this VM started failing with the same error as above:

Unable to release guest. Error: Unfreeze error: [Backup job failed.
Cannot create a shadow copy of the volumes containing writer's data.

Has there been any progress with this? I called support and they are sending me a generic article on troubleshooting the error, but since this seems to be related to MS Azure products, I wanted to check here too.

Are you creating application-consistent backup (Application Aware Image Processing)? If so, this framework might indeed fail, if conflicting 3-party VSS provider is installed.

There is not much that support team can do for this matter - either disabling AAIP or uninstalling provider in question will be needed.

This is an extremely common Microsoft application that enables organizations to use Office 365. I'm really curious what others who posted here ended up doing.

We can't uninstall it, so I guess the only thing we can do is remove application aware image processing? What do we lose by doing this?

Thank you for your replies.

Without it VM in backup file will be in crash consistent state (the same as it would be after a power outage). Thanks.

That is what I figured. I still hope to hear what others above have done or if they found any resolution other than removing or taking off AAIP.
