RTM + Windows 10 Creators Update + ReFS

Post by adapterer » 2 people like this post

Just thought I'd share my experience with the RTM version and a newly created ReFS local disk (after Windows 10 Creators update).. check out that merge performance on a single 1TB 7200RPM HDD  . Very happy with this product so far :)

Wow that is impressive. Time to test ReFS with Windows 10. 8)

I'll add that this integration with ReFS is obviously not limited to Win10 or a VBR based repository that is formatted with WS2016 ReFS v3.1 - this applies to all storage (share or DAS) that is formatted with ReFS v3.1.

Yeah I'll add that this is seriously nothing special in terms of hardware.. a single crappy 5 year old Seagate HDD, and yes this is DAS, not a Veeam VBR repo.

Quick question, does ReFS still require modifying the registry (AllowRefsFormatOverNonmirrorVolume) to format single drives? I'm running Creators (15063.250) and attempting to format a USB drive does not give me the ReFS option.

Thanks,
~Bill

I didn't have to do anything with the registry to see the ReFS option. Maybe it's a MBR vs GPT issue? (I used GPT on the initialize.)

64k - From other B&R ReFS topics, Veeam has said 64k was what to use.

I also have GPT...I just compared a USB drive to a USB stick... a 2TB USB drive shows as "Basic" in disk management and allows formatting to NTFS, exFAT or REFS. An 8GB USB stick shows as "Removable" (even though the other drive is also removable) in disk management and allows formatting to NTFS, FAT32, and exFAT (REFS is missing).

Also of note, the USB stick has an "Active" partition, and perhaps Windows is being smart enough to not offer REFS for "Active" partitions... (though rather than prevent me from formatting REFS, I'd prefer the partition simply become not-Active...

Thanks,
~Bill

For some reason you need to format the partition as NTFS first, then REFS is available.

For whatever reason, ReFS is not a format option for a "clean" USB memory stick...

Is there are comparable option for linux users?
I think ZFS /BTRFS might also be able to do something similar in general, wouldn't it? But would the veeam linux agent also use it?

This. I just ran into the same thing. Setting up a new USB brick for a small customer, was formatted exFat, so I diskpart/clear'ed it. The formatting from disk manager won't let you select REFS to start off. Thanks, Microsoft.

Not working with a ReFS USB HDD!
Merge without fast clone ...

Only local disk seems working
