Restore to Hyper-V on Windows 10

Post by dphillipscng »

We are currently using Shadow protect for image based backups but will be switching to Veeam Physical Agents once we get the last piece of this figured out, here's the scenario:
ShadowProtect offers a feature to do an "instant restore" called virtual boot which takes the backup file and creates a VM in oracle virtual box so you can fire up a server image in case of hardware failure, we currently run this on a seperate Windows 7 box (because the required version of VirtualBox is not Windows 10 compatible), this box is the target for the backups to an internal drive separate from the OS, we are looking to do something similar with Veeam Physical agent but to a windows 10 box running the Veeam Console and with Hyper-V installed on it, this PC would be the target repository for the Physical agent backups, in case of physical hardware failure we would want to restore the backups to Hyper-V on this backup appliance Windows 10 computer, I know there is an option to restore the backups to Hyper-V, but since we are trying to restore to Hyper-V on Windows 10 the files fail to install via the Veeam console when adding the local PC as a Hyper-V server since it requires Hyper-V on a Server OS, I understand that you do not support backing up of VM's on Windows 10 based Hyper-V but why can't we at least restore to it? If we could get this working we would switch our customer base over from ShadowProtect to Veeam physical agents immediately, I have also tried converting the backups files to virtual hard drives and yes this does work, but depending on the backup file size that could take a long time to convert since it has to extract the backup data and dump it into a Thick Provisioned virtual hard drive file so this is not the solution we are looking for, we want instant restore to Hyper-V on Windows 10... Anyone have any thoughts or would this need to be a feature request?

Hello Daniel,

Thank you for your request. That’s true Veeam B&R does not support Hyper-V running on Windows 10 thus Instant Recovery won’t work and Export to virtual disk remains the only option. For more details - check this thread
