Using Server 2008 R2 instead of Server 2016 for Veeam B&R

Post by burak »

Hello,

are there any advantages for using Windows Server 2016 for Veeam B&R Management instead of Server 2008 R2?
Currently, Veeam B&R is installed on a Hyper-V host which backups two hosts on a NAS repository. Another dedicated server with Server 2008 R2 is available, which could manage the Veeam backup jobs. Does I lose any features that are only available by using Server 2016?

Thanks

I found out that if you are using REFS in the vm`s that you are backing up, you cannot open them on 2008r2 or 2012r2 (REFS version of 2016 release).
Other than that, there should be no problems.

ReFS is not used as file systme inside of the VMs but is used on the storage that holding the VMs on both Hyper-V hosts. So, I think this isn't a problem?

Hi Burak,

You should be ok with the described scenario, also review this thread about ReFS and 2016 Host, it might be useful. Thanks!
