Hi foggy,

I know that v9.5 came out last year. I just hoped to get the feature within v9.5, released with a service pack or maybe in v10 :D
Getting the feature in the near future would help us backing up our fileserver, running on a VNX...

I would not expect this feature implemented in product updates. Just to set proper expectations - the underlying complexity and amount of changes required makes it a feature of a major release, rather than of an update. Thanks.

[MERGED] 9.5 NetApp Storage Snapshots for CIFS and iSCSI

Post by thomas321 »

Hi guys,

is it possible to backup CIFS and iSCSI volumes which are NOT attached to VMware by using the direct storage snapshot feature?
If not, PLEASE add it to the next version.

Thanks!

Hi Thomas, it is currently not possible to backup such volumes (except File Copy functionality), but it is already on the table.

However, ISCSI disks can be backed up from the inside - install Veeam Agent for Windows and back machine up. Thanks.

Hi foggy,

can you tell us what "already on the table" means? Is there any development going on or is it just "in discussion"?
I saw requests about that since around 5 years ago...

How are the chances to see it in Veeam 10?

Thanks!

Hi Thomas, as mentioned above, we do not comment on any particular feature's chances to get into this or that version until official announcements.

Hi foggy,

I understand you can't promise something for an upcoming release.
But could you at least tell us if there is actual development/programming going on or is it more or less "just in discussion" ?

Thanks!

I can only tell that this is a high priority feature for us, but I cannot comment on whether it is already in development or not.

Also adding that the ability to backup a CIFS share would be very beneficial for us as it would allow us to expand Veeam across the infrastructure.

[MERGED] Backup and Restore of Windows Share info and permis

Post by murg235@lni.wa.gov »

Good Morning,

I found out that Veeam does not backup and restore Share info and permissions for a windows Server. We are planning to move all of our Physical Servers to Veeam from Commvault using the Veeam Agents for windows. What are Veeam customers doing for a work around to be able to backup and restore the Shares? Is there any Plans for this to be implemented in the next version?

Thanks for your help

Instead of using CIFS shares off your storage array why not spin up a Windows file server under your hypervisor? This will allow you to use Veeam to backup the CIFS share. We were using CIFS shares off a Netapp box but transitioned to Windows File Servers running under ESXi. Not only did this allow Veeam for backup but it gave us several things that the Netapp either could not do or had a harder time doing. Quotas were easier to apply, we can now use file screening, and take advantage of volume shadow copies. Once we setup the file server and its volumes we used Robocopy to move the file share data from the Netapp. Going this route also opened up storage possibilities, we were no longer limited to storage that has both SAN and NAS functionality.

[MERGED] Feature request - NetApp Backup

Post by tom.schmidt »

Hi,

we are looking for a replacement of our ArcServe Backup.
As longtime users of Veeam and the availibility of the new agents, the only thing missing is the ability to backup the shares on our the NetApp filers.
It would be great for DR to be able to do a volume backup, not only a file backup.
I don't want to pay for two backup solutions....

Greetings

Re: Feature request - NetApp Backup

Post by Mike Resseler »

Hi Thomas,

First: Welcome to the forums!

Second: Today we cannot do this yet. But, at VeeamON we did announce this functionality coming to our solution. (https://go.veeam.com/v10)
Note that some of that functionality came out with update 3 of VBR 9.5 (central agent management, universal storage API). Unfortunately I cannot give you any timeline on this functionality when it will make the solution as we prefer to make sure it works good. But it is coming...

[MERGED] Backup copy files on a network map

Post by sirjeje »

Hello,

We are currently trying to do the following
Backup all files present on a CIFS network share.

We think that we may be able to do it via Backup copy files on a map network drive. We mount the cifs share on a specific user on a specific letter.
For the moment, the letter map is not seen on the GUI on the section: File / Microsoft Windows / Host (manager) / Drive letter

Could you please confirm this is possible? And if it's the case, could you please indicate the pre requisites?

Thanks in advance.

This is currently possible with the help of the file copy jobs. Please see more considerations above.

[MERGED] How to backup NetApp shares using VEEAM 9.5 or wait

Post by BackupUser »

Hi there,

We’re using HPE Data Protector to backup our CIFS/NSF-Shares from NetApp Nearstore.

Do we have to wait for Version 10 or are there any tricks to create this kind of backups backups using VAS 9.5?

Best wishes

Thanks for your information.
Is there are small roadmap when we could start CIFS/NFS-Share-Backup using VEEAM?
Maybe this sommer?

@Foggy, it was announced over a year ago and still it's not possible/expected? We've invested a lot to transition to Veeam in order to be able to use CIFS backup. We knew it wasn't available immediately, but over a year??

Same for us, filecopy just doesn't cut it as you can only connect to servers and not a NAS device with a CIFS share for example

Very eagerly waiting for ability to backup CIFS as well, specially directly to tape. We have 70+ sockets licensed on a global deployment and this is one of the main shortfalls of Veeam and one that could cause us to stop investing in Veeam. We have been keeping an eye on this feature for a while as well.
