On a B&R v8 SP1 server, some VMs which has previously FT enabled are steel seen as FT by veeam. How to explain the Veeam server that FT is disabled ? Tried to click "recalculate", to restart the service, to make a snapshot by-hand, ...

Not sure if it will work or not, try to enable and disable FT one again on the source VM. If it doesn't help, then open a support ticket with our technical team.

Btw, along with support for vSphere 6, Veeam B&R v8 Update 2 enables backup of FT VMs:

Support for Fault Tolerant VMs (FT VMs) for backups and replicas. VMs with Fault Tolerance enabled can now be backed up and replicated. Legacy Fault Tolerant VMs must have Fault Tolerance re-enabled after vSphere 6 upgrade using vSphere Web Client to enable this capability.

This is on a fully patched vSphere 6.0 install......if I edit the vCenter in Veeam, it even produces the line: VMware vCenter Server 6.0.0 build-3634793

The VM is a Ubuntu 16.04 Server, with no GUI and I have tried both the VMWare VM Tools and Open VM Tools, both give the same issue.....

Yes, I have fully disabled and re-enabled FT a number of times.

The odd thing is that this was working fine, although a lot of maintenance happened on the same day.......

1. Ubuntu upgraded from 12.x to 16.04
2. Veeam updated to 9 U2
3. vCenter certs replaced with Microsoft CA > VMCA generated certs

Point 3 did cause some issues, although AFAIK, these are all now resolved.

Hello all.

Old post but same problem here.
Upgraded yesterday from vCenter 5.5U3 Windows to VCSA appliance v6.0U2 successfully with VMware migration tool (but my ESXi are still 5.5U3).
Upgraded today from Veeam B&R 9.0 to 9.5 (no problem).

Trying to add my two FT VM in a backup job leads me to an error message:
Cannot add VMs with unsupported fault tolerance version.
Only VMs created with vSphere 6 or later is supported.

Tried to remove and re-enable FT doesn't help.
Of course, these two VMs were created with older vSphere... but what can I do?

Hello all.

The final technical answer to my case is that without a snapshot, Veeam cannot backup a VM.
Some posts around this problem are misleading, but even in my vSphere 6.0U2 (but ESXi 5.5U3), I can't do a snapshot (greyed option) through vSphere client.
Also misleading, the Veeam error message "cannot add VM with unsupported FT version" leads to understand that there is a supported version

The only possible solution seems to do a snapshot through other ways (like NetApp storage snapshot), I could try it but not quickly.

I also imagine a way to do it by script, say pre-backup script suspend FT, backup, post-backup script re-enable FT... I will look into that, but no big hope.

Good news, seems the technician give me a wrong information:
The good one is:

FT VMs in vsphere 6 are supported for snapshots.
To make it work, your VM must have the latest HW version and Fault Tolerance must be enabled using vsphere web client.
If it had been enabled in the previous version, you should disable it and enable again.
Please note that standalone C# client will NOT enable it properly, use web client.

Might be worth updating to the latest Hardware version (which you have done already) and re-enable Fault Tolerance feature. If nothing helps, log a support ticket. Thanks.
