vShpere 5.1 to 6.5 U2

Post by tom__w »

Does Backup Replication 9.5 Update 3a support migrating VMs from 5.1 ESXi hosts to 6.5 U2 ESXi hosts?

If so, is there anything special I should know?

Many thanks!

Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 Update 3a supports the following vSphere Infrastructures:
  • vSphere 6.x
  • vSphere 5.x
  • vSphere 4.1
  • VMware Cloud on AWS
I guess you are talking about Veeam Quick Migration. So in fact, if you migrate VM's from ESXi 5.1 to ESXi 6.5 U2, this should work fine.
I did it several times from 5.5 to 6.5 and it just worked flawlessly.

Please be aware of the steps after such a migration, like VMware Tools and VMware Hardware Version etc.

Here are the prerequisites for Quick Migration:

Hi Tom, Falko is correct, you can use both Quick Migration or replication jobs to migrate between different vSphere versions (provided VM hardware version is supported by destination host).

However, keep in mind that currently support for 6.5U2 is limited. You can read more details here.

Just wanted to follow up and say that Quick Migration worked perfectly migrating 6 VMs (5.1 to 6.5U2).
