correct configuration for HyperV

Post by sysadm.mac »

I have 6 HyperV servers with 45 machines (windows, linux). In a physical server I have installed the VEEAMBACKUP that acts as a proxy. As a repository I have a synology DS1815 +

I currently backup but it takes about 3 days to do everything.

Is there a proxy configuration recommendation? How can I speed up the process?

Hi sysadm.mac,

First: welcome to the forums.

It seems a bit odd that it takes 3 days to backup 45 machines. Considering your setup, I'm guessing you are using on-host proxies instead of offhost proxies. But first, what shows as the bottleneck in the report after the backup?

thanks for your answer.
Exactly, I'm using Off-host backup (automatic proxy selection). At the end of the backup the bottleneck is "Target"

That means that your target storage is not capable of the I/O backup jobs assign to it. What backup method do you use? Forward/reverse incremental?

All copies are made through iSCSI to a synology DS1815 + (network to 1Gb)
Max concurrent Task: 4

Backup mode: Incremental (create synthetic full backup periodcally : Saturday)
ActiveFull backup: Create active full backups periodically (Weekly on selected days: Saturday)

I only do one weekly

So you just perform weekly active full backups with no increments in-between?

SUMMARY
Duraion: 4:40:13
Processing Rate: 112MB/s
Bottleneck; Target

HyperV02:

DATA:
Processed: 863.0GB (100%)
Read: 604.5 GB
Transferred 456,7 GB (1,3x)

SUMMARY
Duraion: 8:53:57
Processing Rate: 19 MB/s
Bottleneck; Target

HyperV03:

DATA:
Processed: 1,8 TB (100%)
Read: 1,3 TB GB
Transferred: 874,6 GB (1,5x)

SUMMARY
Duraion: 12:54:13
Processing Rate: 30 MB/s
Bottleneck; Target

Are these jobs running at the same time? While hyperv01 is acceptable, the other two seem rather slow and both are also showing (as already stated in this thread) that the Synology is the bottleneck. Can you see if there is heavy load on that box while the backup is performing?

I have configured a 2 SSD as R/W cache but it is still 3 days.
I do not see bottle necks in the NAS. It is only used for VM backup

How the storage is added as repository in Veeam B&R - CIFS or Windows (iSCSI LUN)?

Not sure why the rest of the jobs take that longer... I'd ask support for a closer look at your setup.
