Relationship between Daily & Yearly Backups

Post by wjching »

Hi All,

I am having a dilemma understanding between the relationship of a Daily Backup Change Rate as compared to a Yearly Backup Change Rate.

Currently I have a situation whereby one of my customer has an estimated 1.5% Daily Change Rate, and they would like to backup some data for the next 3 years. By simple multiplications I was able to determine the size of backups for the next 3 years.

Daily -> 1.5%
Monthly -> 1.5% x 30 Days = 45%
Yearly -> 45% x 12 Months = 540 %
3 Years -> 540% x 3 Years = 1,620 %

This is what it would look like by the end of 3 years. Which I think the size is humongous & a little unrealistic. Would the above calculation be valid?

Whereby there are some instances where I see requirements having 5% Daily Change Rate and 20% Yearly change rate at the same time. How does the above correlate with my calculations earlier ?

Appreciate anyone's kind explanation on this, and as always thanks in advance ! :D

Regards,
Wen Jun.
Thanks in advance for any suggestion or advice :D

daily change rates = 1.5% so 30 days is 45% and 365 day is 547.5%, well that really unrealistic to me because this sound like ur customer will upgrading storage every months or few months? imagine total backup VM around 5TB how much going to be in 1 month?

I would suggest you install Veeam One to do change rates assessment and also take a look at here: http://rps.dewin.me/

The fact is a change rate 1,5% doesn't mean 1,5% of new data each day, since some blocks will change multiple times during that time, not increasing the file size.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks, at least someone is on the same page with me right now.Unfortunately my customer is not entitled for VEEAM ONE as their license does not permit it. I am using Veeam Backup Reports to evaluate average change rate for a particular workload.

Hi Foggy,

Noted with much thanks for the explanation as well. But typically when I am sizing my backup storage, I would not leave out or assume that there will be duplicate blocks each day. Do Correct me if I am wrong in any way with this thoughts.

I recommend using the tool mentioned by Ryan - it is really good in repository space estimation.

Hi Ryan,

Not at the moment yet. Not too sure if the free edition of Veeam One allows for that. I always thought you would need a valid license such as Enterprise plus to use Veeam One.
