Advanced installation - Monitor client on ONE Server: beware, DON'T do that!

Post by cpfleger »

https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/one/d ... ?ver=95u4

tells you in a red warning box that
you cannot install the server part on the computer that is already hosting the client part, and conversely.

While this would read as if it would NOT be POSSIBLE to eg install VONE Monitor client on the VONE Monitor server
this is unfortunately not true - today a customer did exactly this:
installing VONE Monitor Client on the VONE ONE Server.

No warning, no nothing - installation simply went through... sucessful. Not that much, as since then connection between Client and Server hasn't possible any more. Client now tells in the orange Configuration Issue Pane that there is no connection possible to the SQL server - oh well...

As in this particular case the MS SQL machine (still, phew) also serves the VBR and EM it might be a problem of the VONE DB?
Case is opened, will post updates and outcomes here.
In the meantime: don't try this at home ;)

Regards!

Hi Claus!
Could you specify the concern, please?
The customer did what was written not to do and now he has a connection problem between VO Server and VO Client.
Do you want Veeam ONE to check and avoid such cases?
Thanks!

I'd say that the user guide (and the VMCE documentation) should clearly point out that obviously it IS technically possible to do that but you MUST/SHOULD NOT do it.

For my understanding CANNOT do has the meaning that it is NOT possible at all - eg. when trying to install the Monitor client on the server you receive an error message. But that did not happen.

Btw the problem the customer ran into seems to be the #1 here: veeam-one-f28/top-issues-tracker-t56899.html#p313245

Got it.
I'll discuss it with technical writers, thanks for the heads up.
As for the connection problem, it may be caused by the known bug, you've mentioned. Let's wait for the support team investigation.

BTW Support sent a SQL query (probably the hot fix mentioned in the top issues tracker for #1) that resolved the problem so that customer now can connect monitor client with VONE MS SQL DB and VONE server :D

So it was the known bug, not related to the subject.
Good to know, thanks Claus!
