Automatic Tags on VMs

Post by wms »

Hello All,

my issue is about automatic tags on non-tageg virtual machines.
For explanation:
In VeeAm One in the alarms, there are a few virtual machines without a
backup tag.
If an alarm appears, we can decide to run a script.
In this script we need to add a backup tag to the VM activated the alarm.
I found out how to add a tag by a Powershell Script, but not in dependence
of the alarm.
How can I select the VM made the alarm in the PowerShell Script to get the
name of the VM in the following variable?
$VMs| New-TagAssignment -Tag $TagToVM
For explanation:
VM "Test1" has no Backup-Tag and sends an error from VeeAm One.
Because of the error, the PowerShell Script should start.
Now i want to get the name of the VM "Test1" into the variable of "$VMs".
Is this possible?

Thanks in advance, best regards,
Mike

Hi Mike,

This does not answer your question but have you thought using Veeam ONE to set tags for VMs based on your criteria?

Thanks!

Hello Vitaly,

I know this way, but in our infrastructure we have more than 2000 VMs.
And as I know, there is no way to automatically tag VMs, or am I wrong?
So we would have to do this for all VMs manually which means a really lot of work.

But what I found out yesterday evening was following:
veeam-one-f28/onebelievable-tricks-veea ... 24149.html
This is a thread from you, but i can't find any Scripts on this thread?
Especially the script from the first heading "VM with no backup" would be interesting for me.

If all this can't help, I will write a PS-Script which reads out all Names of VMs with no backup tag and let PowerShell do the Job of tagging the VMs.

Thanks a lot for your help for now!

That was always possible to do in any version of Veeam ONE ;) Actually, that was one of the main ideas for implementing this functionality, either automatically assign tags to VMs based on the certain criteria or use these groups in our predefined reports.

Here are some screenshots of the Business View group creation wizard which allows you to write tags automatically > Configuring Single-Parameter Categorization

All script samples are stored in the KB article, you can find it over here.
