Starwind vs AWS VTL Gateway

Post by tohhmas »

Has anyone here done any performance comparisons between the two options for tape gateway systems (AWS and Starwind)?

Having a hard time finding experiences or comments by people using them except from a two year old reddit thread.

Hello tohhmas,

I do remember that during our initial tests StartWind VTL was up to ten times faster than Amazon VTL (same infrastructure), so definitely worth checking. Cheers!

Thanks Dmitry.

Are there any alternatives that I'm overlooking here? In Ed Watson's blog post from May 2017, there were plans to announce additional options for VTL support. Did these plans ever come to fruition?

tohhmas,

I believe Ed was somehow referring to the upcoming Cloud Tier functionality that was just released in Veeam B&R 9.5 Update 4.

I am not aware of any other VTL solutions that provide the ability to do the tape out to cloud storage. Cheers!
