On- or offhost backup - Hyper-V 2016

Post by JLundgren »

Hello,

I may be mistaken but I have seen some indications in the forum that when using 2016-version of Hyper-V, it is recommended to use on-host backup instead of off-host.

Could you elaborate on this ?

Thanks.

Hello Johny,

Could you please point me to the aforementioned topic? Regardless of the Hyper-V version, having off-host proxy is more reasonable because it allows you to remove some unnecessary load off the hosts.

Thanks

If you are using CSVs on your Hyper-V hosts, off-host backup requires the use of a hardware VSS provider. The chances your storage vendor actually makes a hardware VSS provider that is stable and reliable are... not great. I generally only use off-host backup when using SMB shares for Hyper-V which does not require a hardware VSS provider.

Thanks for your answers.
This thread for instance:

microsoft-hyper-v-f25/upgrade-hyper-v-h ... 60808.html

I can't find the other thread right now but it had something to do with which version of Hyper-V you used.
And HV in 2016 worked better with on-host backup according to that thread.

Hi Johny,

The aforementioned thread does not necessarily indicate there is an issue related to Hyper-V 2016, upgrade, etc. - it's about hardware VSS providers and their stability. Unfortunately, we do not know how this has ended, because the poster did not mention his support case ID. Also, I've tried to search for the "other thread" you mentioned with no luck.

I should say that according to our QC guys, there is no difference in the approach to backup proxy architecture design between Hyper-V 2016 and 2012 versions, while the point mentioned by Nmdange makes sense to me. On-host proxy is more stable and less risky but causes additional load on the host, however, it might pay off in the long term.

Fedor

Ok. Thanks.
Stability makes me feel good in larger environments like ours as an SP.
Choosing onhost path, could you supply me with best practices ?
