Hi,

Are there any plans on adding the possibility to backup Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online with Veeam?

Regards,

Hi Johannes,

Not at this moment, it is a complete different solution compared to O365 but we are keeping an eye on it, especially around customer adoption

Dynamics 365 and Business Central

Post by tgawarecki »

I'm not sure if this is the correct place, but I'm starting here... I work for a software company developing a Dynamics 365/Business Central solution we'll be selling to clients. Microsoft backup/restore capabilities leave a LOT to be desired. I was wondering if it's anywhere on the road map to provide backup/restore capabilities for these products? Thanks!

Hi Tony, I've merged your question within the relevant topic and for now, the answer is still the same. No plans at this moment but we would love to hear how you are using it and what you are missing in terms of restore capabilities.

Hello Niels, I'm not sure what you mean by wanting to hear how we are using it. Do you mean Dynamics and Business Central? If so, we are developing a software package that more or less equates to banking/credit union software packages, only ours is for faith based, nonprofit organizations (basically denominational headquarters). All data will be stored in Microsoft's cloud, either in Dynamics 365, Business Central, or SharePoint online. We've got the SharePoint online backups covered with Veeam for Office 365, but have to rely on MS backup utilities for Dynamics and Business Central. My understanding is there are several things lacking in their backup utilities. To name a few, user friendliness, short retention periods and I think restore granularity. Is this what you were looking for? Thanks!

Hi, We're in the Financial industry and currently use an on-prem installation for MS Dynamics CRM but the planning is underway to migrate to MS Dymanics CRM Online. Currently we use our VBR to handle it (app/sql/scribe VMs) but we'll need a solution that can handle the MS Online version.

Thanks

G.

Hi Gordon,

As you can see, there is quite some interest in Dynamics Online, but it is not a part of O365 and is a complete different solution. What I am interested in is to know what modules you are going to use

All, please give more information when you ask for Dynamics. Dynamics exists out of multiple different modules so the one that you are using would be useful

+1 on Dynamics support; I have 3 customers asking about this support today;

@Mike Resseler I am not sure if you caught this statement from Microsoft at MS Ignite:
Microsoft Teams users can now access Dynamics 365 data without the need for licences for the CRM platform.
Microsoft has already moved in recent months to deepen ties between Dynamics 365 and the team collaboration app; in March, the company added the ability to embed Teams chat into the Dynamics 365 app, while improving access to data from within Teams.
At its Inspire event this week, Microsoft announced that all Teams users will now have access to Dynamics data from within the collaboration app, regardless of whether they have a Dynamics 365 license. Admins will be able to set permission and access rules to restrict access to customer records.
“Dynamics 365 users can now invite anyone in the organisation to view and collaborate on customer records right within the flow of a Teams chat or channel,” Jared Spataro, corporate vice president for Microsoft 365, said in a blog post.
By eliminating the “licensing tax” that had previously held customers back from using the available integration, CRM data can be shared among more employees, he said. That would allow sales and customer service employees to interact with colleagues who don’t routinely use the CRM tool, allowing finance teams to share purchase order and payment details with sales staff, for example.
The announcement “helps to reinforce the growing links that Microsoft is keen to establish between Teams and Dynamics 365,” said Angela Ashenden, principal analyst at CCS Insight. It can also help Dynamics 365 customers drive broader adoption, without the need to invest in additional licenses for casual or irregular users, she said.
This will most likely have a massive impact on the way that business' will utilise Dynamics in the future. Given we have nothing today, even a basic backup and recovery would be a step in the right direction ... ie: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power- ... vironments as a first start...

With MS now providing Dynamics as part of a business' M365 license gives our competitors like AvePoint and Commvault Metallic.io a massive advantage over our M365 data protection story moving forward, with customers that use or will use Dynamics 365.

Hoping we are already on the path to a solution here...

Dynamics licensing is still different from M365 licensing. While certain functionality will be possible as a M365 user (still need to so which M365 license you will need) the people that actively work in dynamics will need to continue to work with dynamics licensing.

That said, at this moment, we are still keeping an eye on Dynamics, but no concrete plans

Hi Polina,
Personally, I have no experience with the modules in Dynamics365, my support for this case is only based on the needs of our customers.
Recently some potential customers asked us, if we would be able to backup their Dynamics365 environment.
Until now, I had to say no but who knows what comes in future with your products ;-)

Now that Veeam is able to backup SQL in Azure, what would it take to backup D365 data? Isn't it a SQL DB residing in Azure? I am having customers request this functionality as well.

+1 Dynamics 365

The floodgates are opening! As a Service Provider, we have many customers migrating to Dynamics 365. We need to be able to back up their instance. They are confused when we tell them that the tool we provide for them to backup everything else in their 365 tenant can't protect Dynamics 365. Can someone in the know at Veeam please provide an updated comment on roadmap for this? I can tell you that this is forcing product-alignment reconsiderations for our practice.

The update remains the same. M365 and Dynamics 365 are two separate solutions and we always keep an eye on the market and see what is going in. Unfortunately this is not something that we can "snapshot" and be done with it.

When someone asked this same question during Microsoft Ignite last week, Rick Vanover replied simply "Stay tuned!". Hopefully soon we'll have some sense as to where/whether this is in fact a road-mapped capability or not.
