Immutability Retention

We are looking to implement immutable online backups and started looking at the new Object Lock feature in V10. https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... ml?ver=100
But our initial discovery found that we could not do very long retention. We are wanting to have immutability for 7 years. Is that not possible?


We've moved over to looking at doing the AWS VTL method https://www.veeam.com/wp-using-aws-vtl- ... guide.html , which sounds like it should do it and we're going to test.

But ideally we would use the new Object Lock feature.


Did we miss something, or can we not do 7 year retention with the new object lock immutability in v10?

Should be possible with powershell. But the command was never given there

I would highly suggest VTL for a 7 year retention. the Object lock feature is for S3 and keeping 7 years in S3 would be a more expensive situation and if you made a mistake with a job you are stuck with it for 7 years.

It can be done with PowerShell indeed, but it's not a good idea. We don't just randomly block this in UI, there are good reasons that have to deal with the architecture.

Thing is, we see SOBR Capacity Tier as a hot storage, so it's immutability logic is designed for cost-efficient protection of recent backups.

7 years retention is rather a cold storage use case, this will be addressed with SOBR Archive Tier in v11, including immutability for the entire duration of the retention policy, and support for the appropriate cold storage tiers (Glacier and Deep Archive).

Release naming aside, we've been shipping major releases approx. annually, so more like in half a year. Should be in private beta next month, so you will be able to play with it already.

Oh that's a lot fast than I expected. Will Glacier be supported in that beta?
In our situation we have 7-year backups in 2 physical locations so the cloud is being positioned as worst case scenario recovery and in the future we may reduce retention locally.

So as you could imagine, recovery time isn't a concern, so cheapest cost per TB is.

Yes, the private beta next month will be feature-complete. Glacier is already supported in the current builds.

Sounds like it's the perfect target for your use case.
