Backup Azure VMs is taking hours

Post by NLO_elisa »

Hi all,

When the backup job starts the snapshot is almost instantly available in the VM Resource Group.
Seems like the appliance is not getting this confirmation directly.

Before snapshots were taken in 1 minute and transferring to repo started immediately

----
Snapshot backup of dc001 has finished: 1 hour 30 minutes 8 seconds
Processing DC001 to Repo: 100% 18.1 GB transferred: 14 minutes 54 seconds

Consistent Snapshot: Snapshot backup of iaas01 finished: 3 hours 1 minute 34 seconds
Processing IaaS01 to Repo: 100% 14.3 GB transferred: 13 minutes
----

This is not a support forum, but if your technical issue is worth sharing with the wider community, you may post it according to the following rules:

You must reference the support case ID when posting about ANY technical issue. We require case ID to have information about the poster, and for access to the debug logs. Topics without a support case ID will be removed by moderators. Always open a support case first, then create a forum post.

Do not post log snippets as they only trash the forum for no good. Full debug logs are required for troubleshooting, and the log analysis is automated. To create a support logs package, use the Support Information option. Then open a support case, upload the logs, and include the case ID in your forum post instead of log snippets.

Hi,
Veeam Support - Case # 04740353 (still in progress)

After hours of troubleshooting by myself it seems like the trigger to create the snapshot puts the Azure VM in temporary Provisioning State: Updating, normally this would only take a minute and should change back to Provisioning State: Succeeded.
When this is not happening the Provisioning State: Updating will keep running van 1 hour and 30 minutes before it will revert to Succeeded. Once Succeeded the transfer to the repo starts immediately.
I tried enabling Azure Backup, behavior is the same but now my Veeam Backups are running back like before. Snapshot and Transfer only takes 15 minutes.

Thanks for sharing your own findings. We will for sure look into what could cause this once your case gets resolved.

For closure, deploying additional plugin or performing actions on the VMs will impact the provisioning status to “updating”. If backup is taken the same time, it will wait untill provisioning status changes back to “succeeded” before it will continue. This caused the delays.
