Please warn users that some files are excluded in "Entire computer" backlup

Post by ml35 » 2 people like this post

I have discovered that my Outlook cached .OST files are gone from restore - This is NOT what I expect from a "Entire computer"-type backup! 😡

veeam-agent-for-windows-f33/why-is-veea ... 47565.html

Please adjust the UI and the least you can do is make a link to the registry path of excluded files!

The wording says "deleted, temporary and page files", but Outlook .OST file IS NOT TEMPORARY. It IS a cached file indeed, but is a persistent permanent file!

And Not once I know a person has managed to rescue his emails from the cached .OST file when the Exchange went boom and had to be restored from a week old backup, so that locally cached .OST file is very valuable!

vagent use VSS and VSS does not backup .ost

if you want vagent to backup .ost, then do this:
Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\BackupRestore\FilesNotToSnapshot
Delete the OutlookOST subkey

thanks for the advice, but if you read carefully my topic is not about how to backup ost, but how to warn users ahead of time that their backup does not contain the ost file.

Mmm. I get that this is a VSS issue at its base, however it would be pretty nice to give admins the chance to review the excluded files in a straightforward and easy way.

The wording of 'deleted, temporary and page files' leaves me thinking that its just those types of files, not that these files are a subset _example_ of whats not backed up, nor any hint as to the root reason (VSS).

We will try make "files excluded" message more clear and descriptive in the future builds.

the solution is already mentioned in the first post as a link to an older thread where other people initially started complaining.
