Re: Dell PowerStore Storage Plug-in (Issues and Future Release?)

Post by POM »

Just finished deploying some brand new PowerStores.
Would come in handy to have the plug-in available any time soon.

Any updates ?

Hi guys, apart of release date, can be confirmed that Metro will be supported with new plugin for Powerstore? And if it's supported, under which restrictions?

Hi Xavier, Metro is not officially supported by the current plug-in version, and the new version doesn't change anything in this regard. Even though the replication target volumes are not specifically filtered out by the plug-in and can be used for restores in case the target storage is added to Veeam B&R, we didn't have a chance to verify that since we didn't have access to such a configuration in the lab.

I'm in the same boat. Upgraded to Veeam 12 but holding off on PowerStore 3 upgrade until the fixed plug-in is released....

Just adding my voice to the "me too" movement. 🤞

Sure, I would have the same scenario, where Powerstore 3.x upgrade would be on hold. The matter is about new systems coming from factory with the 3.x already installed.
As per now, 2 projects on hold for this reason.
And not very happy about "no officially supported" for Metro volumes..as per it's specific for 3.x version. That's a pity that cannot be tested

Same experience as me, hardware was delivered with PowerStore 3.X - so no chance of a downgrade. As it's been out since July '22, I suspect it's been an issue for a while. My unit was delivered in October '22.

It is. Understanding your impatience, just give us a little more time to finalize and release the plug-in.

Hi everyone,

A short status update for the next version of the Dell PowerStore Plug-in for Veeam Backup & Replication written by Dell.

What's new:
- Support for PowerStore OS 3.x

As the plug-in is developed by Dell, we depend on access to their systems and code release timing. Everything was in place from the Dell side on March 22nd and we started our quality assurance testing immediately. It should be completed in the next few days and so far we haven't found any issues during the verification. We plan to release it with Dell at the beginning of next week.

Awesome, have a number of installs that were looking forward to this, thank you so much!

@foggy would it be possible to request Metro Volume support for this plugin? I realize you addressed it earlier, and it's a feature that was only released a short time ago on Powerstore 3.x mid-2022... but we have a fair number of customers buying these units and utilizing that deployment model. I realize your lab doesn't have that setup, but I wanted to ask or at least put in a +1 for the feature request for this.

Given Veeam supports the large HPE, NetApp, Lenovo and Pure names for backing up from secondary targets/synchronous copies in general, I'm hoping Veeam can accommodate Dell's, too... at least validate that we can utilize metro volumes to source storage-snapshots for backups and replication.

With the death of Nimble and the cost of Alletra 5000/6000's through the roof, we expect a lot more PowerStore sales than Alletra's in the coming 18mo, from a reselling partner perspective.

Thanks for the feedback of the Metro Cluster demand. The plug-in is developed by Dell and I can confirm that they have access to all APIs including the newest Universal Storage API that can enable such scenarios. We will forward your requests to them. Please ensure as well that your Dell representative knows about this demand to raise Dell internal awareness.

Don't know if anybody else has had problems, but this plugin took out some of my servers tonight. They lost connectivity to the storage until a reboot. It may be related to me having an open Veeam Explorer session for one of my storage snapshots. It tried to back up the VM / volume associated with the explorer session and hung for two hours. Took out the backup proxy so all of my other backups failed.

I'd ask you to open a case and share the logs so our team could investigate what was the reason for the conflict.

Will do. Last night I noticed that almost every VM fell back to VM snapshots instead of using storage. Ticket being submitted now.
