Office 365 shared mailbox licensing

Post by mollie »

Hello,

the website states that all shared mailboxes are free to backup if they don't require a license in O365.
Our reseller / MSP insisted that your shared mailbox count can't be higher than 50% of your active user count,
otherwise you need to license them.
He used this as an argument to push us to another product.

Could you clarify if this is really the case?

Thanks

Hi @mollie

First: Welcome to our forums!

No, this is not the case actually. Shared mailboxes do not require a license in VB365, not even in those conditions. So I am afraid you received wrong information

Cheers

Hello.

I have the issue on a customer that 16 shared mailboxes are consuming a license in M365 Backup.
How is this possible? We are using a rental license.

Thank you for you help!

Hi Thomas

Did the customer assign Exchange Online licenses (e.g. Exchange Online Plan 1 or Plan 2) to these Shared Mailboxes?
If so, then it will also consume licenses in Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365.

Hi Fabian.

Thanks for the quick reply!

No the don´t have licenses and the mailboxes are below 50GB, but i figured out the mailboxes originally where primary user mailboxes and we converted afterwards to shared mailboxes.

Could this be the reason, because of still having restore points created from the primary user mailbox in the chain?

Thank you and BR.

Hi Thomas

Yes, that could be the reason.
When did you converted the mailboxes to Shared? Normally it will take 31 days without a backup until licenses units are automatically revoked. I expect that 31 days after the conversion, the license units gets revoked.
