VM becomes locked after attempted veeam backup. Yikes!

Post by davidb1234 »

We have purchased VEEAM and I am doing some testing with some VMs. I created a reverse incremental job to backup 5 VMs to disk and the first time I ran the job it worked great.

I reran the same job about 30 minutes later and I got SOAP FAULT CBT ERRORs on a VM.

I tried powering on the VM and was unable to power on as the VM files are locked. I opened a case with VMWARE and they are very confused about what is happening and I can't help but blame veeam since this VM was fine until I tried to backup with VEEAM.

The VMs I am backing up are powered off during the backup.

VMWARE support was able to clear the locks on the files eventually but when I reran the backup more SOAP FAULTS CBT ERRORS and the VM is locked again.

We started on Veeam 6 update 3 so we are fully up to date. Has anyone seen this error this is pretty serious.... VMWARE is still trying to figure out why the files are locked and how to release them. We are using ESXi 5.0 Update 1 fully up to date.

Code: Select all

TPL-7X64_BASE	Warning	8:52:05 AM	8:55:34 AM	40.0 GB	36.0 GB	1.1 MB	0:03:28 Cannot use CBT: Soap fault. These VMs are single DISK VMs about 40GB each. Nothing special.

The locked file was due to some other VM using the base disk of the template. it must have been a bug when the Vm was deployed.

However i am still chasing this soap fault CBT error problem that seems to appear and reappear. Seems to happen on powered off VMs. Any ideas on this?

Are these types of errors normal when backing up powered off VMs?
