I have introduced Veeam Data Cloud Vault to my infrastructure and need to plan it most effecient use. I have a lot of data -about 75tb I am replicating across 4 Exagrids (compressed and deduped) at 2 different Datacenters and also writing to tape so I am just looking at ways to get some of those backups (will only write tier 0 VM's there for cost issues) there with the smallest footprint and least waste of backup resources in general. If I were to use the setting for Capacity tier on the SOBR it would write all backup files that go to thet SOBR to the VDCV so that won't work well for me.
So I am thinking..
1. I could setup another SOBR with a NAS performance tier (PS1200T) and then setup the capacity tier to the VDCV - obviously would require VM's backed up in more than one job (and add to the VBK count) but could give compression and encryption.
2. Setup a job directly to write to the VDVC - would also be an extra job config (and vbk but not locally) but could give compression and encryption.
3. Setp a backup Copy job to write the data after it is backed up to the EXG. This would not require a new backup file (still be an additional job) and this would copy data from the EXG but would this be EXG's dedupe and encryption copied or just whatever encryption/compression I have setup in the copy job. If it is EXG's encryption how would a restore to an alternate location from the VDCV work?
4. Any other options/suggestions?
In a perfect world I would just write my full weeklys and monthlys to the VDCV as I am encrypted and immutable (EXG's version of immutability which is a little different) locally for a minimum of 14 days. I think this more possible with the first 2 options but not with the copy job that I have seen.
Basically I am just trying to see what may be the best option (considering final cloud size, job count and number of VBK's) without having to setup all three options and analyze.
First post ever here so feel free to tell me if this is a dumb question!
Thanks for any input!

Re: Backups on Exagrid then to Veeam Data Cloud Vault
Hi Jeff, welcome to the forums. Not a dumb question at all, double-checking ideas is always a good practice
I think Backup Copy is the best bet here given your listed interests in not utilizing additional resources.
Storage level encryption handle by the storage and data leaving the storage devices would be decrypted (same with the space savings from the deduplication appliances as it's read out), so use the Backup Copy job to handle this.
You are correct that Backup Copy will have more than just the full backups, but right now that would be the case for other options also. I think Capacity Tier while a great option might be more than you're needing for your use case right now, so Backup Copy meets your goal best in this situation. Capacity Tier does have the advantage that the Move to Capacity Tier option works on inactive chains. (not the current VBK + increments, but previous chains when using the Forward Incremental retention mode)
So a few items for you to consider on what's best and most comfortable for you, but I think option 3 (backup copy) meets your needs best here.
