migrating veeam server to a new VM out of AD domain
i know it's a quite common topic, but I am going to try a migration on a very critical environment, I am not probably able to test it in advance, so I have this question that keeps me awake during the night:
We already know (from a previous failure) that it's better to disable MFA from Veeam console, before to do the last configuration backup.
We have also a question regarding users: the BUILTIN\Administrators group has been previously removed from Veeam Backup Administrators in Veeam console.
Only domain users were listed as Veeam Backup Administrators.
Is it ok to re-add BUILTIN\Administrators as Veeam Backup Administrator in order to be able to login in VBR Console after the migration completes? Should we do anything else or ...
any suggestion is welcome
P.S.: I have also opened a severity 4 Case # 07397473 to get help on this topi.
thanks in advance

Re: migrating veeam server to a new VM out of AD domain
Hi Alessandro,
Steps look fine, and if it gives you comfort, I think they're reasonable steps
The Before You Begin section for the Configuration Restore (and migration) has a pretty suitable checklist in my opinion on how to prepare for the Restore/Migration.
Our KB here also has a "common issues" for migrating Veeam Backup and Replication out of Domain, so I think this should help you plan in advance for potential issues and also give a quick check-list if you have issues after removing it from Domain.

Re: migrating veeam server to a new VM out of AD domain
thanks! I have read especially Impact 4 from the KB which is about this topic. In fact removing the BUILTIN\Administrators group (due to previous MFA activation) causes the issue I want to prevent.
But it's not cristal clear if, readding it, it's ok to save my life
But I hope so!

Re: migrating veeam server to a new VM out of AD domain
Hi Alessandro,
You're very welcome, and hope that this helps out a bit with your planning. I see Support send a similar list with a few extra steps, but I think this should cover it.
Regarding 4, yes I think adding Administrators group will be a good safe guard for this concern -- if the Veeam Backup and Replication servers are VMs, then of course remember snapshots (I usually remember backups of my VMs, but forget snapshots
Good thing restores are pretty fast).
