How to backup each day to each tape with standad pool

Post by ngan.nt »

Hi all,
I am a newbie in here. I have a question with backup data from file to tape.
I want to backup data each date to each tape. Ex: monday to tap1, tuesday to tape 2....and next monday, data backup to tape 1 without overwrite until tape out of capacity.
I tried to created Daily job, Daily pool, added tape 1- tape 7 for daily backup, Media set create daily. This job run good ultil next monday, the lastest tape in tape 7 and Daily job used it for monday, data was overwrite.
So I crearted Monday job-Monday pool, Tuesday job- Tuesday poll...and add one tape to each pool for sure data of monday only write in one tape.
I know about Media set with three option but it seem no way for my idea.
Anyone have any idea with this problem.
Thank for read.

Hi ngan.nt, welcome to the forums.

Can I ask you to check the last answer in the FAQ here? Basically, a specific tape for each day is possible, it's just a little bit of configuration.

Hi David.Domask.
Thank for your reply. I already read your link, and I used it in my system now: "So I crearted Monday job-Monday pool, Tuesday job- Tuesday pool...and add one tape to each pool for sure data of monday only write in one tape".
That solution help me with small system, but if I my system scale up, need more pool like Daily pool so I need create alot job and pool for it.

Hi ngan.nt,

You're very welcome, and indeed, that should work.

Regarding your comment on scaling, I'm not sure I fully agree that the model particularly becomes that much more difficult, but I do get your point. The requirement for a specific tape per day is the challenge here, and GFS will not help in any meaningful way.

Veeam uses the concept of media sets for Tape backups; while the idea might seem a bit difficult at first, in short all you really need to remember is:

- When a media set closes, it cannot be reopened
- A new media set must start with a free tape
- There are several situations where Veeam may close a media set before the scheduled closing

That's why this strategy for a specific tape per day requires a bit of finessing. At scale this is doable, you simply add more tapes to a given media pool and will need to decide on your media set rotations, but once you get to the point that your backups scale past a few tapes, it's probably better to just leave it to the auto-selection as likely you will need to be searching for which tape it is anyways. In the Restore Wizard, it will tell you which tapes are needed for a given restore point, so once you start scaling larger than a few tapes for a given backup, using auto-selection makes a bit more sense I think.
