So I'm trying to upgrade a community edition VBR which is very old (v9.5). And since I don't think you can do an upgrade from the current version installed on the backup server to even v11a, I thought it would just be easier to take a backup file from the backup server and import it straight into v12.2. Simple enough right?
On the home tab, it has an "Actions" category that shows import and export backup. What does this function do exactly? The description states: "Select one or more restore points to export into the self-contained full backup file. This functionality is designed for archiving important restore points and making them portable", but it doesn't say anything about how it goes to achieve this. Does it bundle up into one .zip file like the support case logs do or does it do something else?
I would also like to know if there is an easier way of upgrading from 9.5 community edition, this specific backup server hasn't been touched in years and I really need to get this upgraded asap. Can I just upgrade it to v11a then onto 12.2 remotely? The backup server is a Windows Server Core, so no GUI. It's managed by another server which has the console on it, simply connecting to the backup server via VBR.
On the download section there is a link to the older versions, but I do not know if it would span this old version. 9.5 had many updated and maybe it is possible for the latest version.
So see what you can still download with the rights that you have on the download portal and check the release notes next to the download to see upgrade compatibility.
Anyway for the import. I would add the old repository (folder/server) to the new server or copy the data to the new storage and add it again as repository. When you do this, there is a checkbox for importing existing backups. After the import completes, all old backups can be found under Home-Backup-Disk-Disk(Imported) or similar path. You can then recreate the jobs and select the repository. Under the repository selection dropdown there is a blue link that is called "mapp existing backup" and you can select your imported backups. From there you can continue with the backups.
Restores of the old restore points can be done as well by right clicking on them and select the specific restore option.
The import button itself is more for a one of situation with an existing backup file or so. Here as well the backups land in the import section of the backups and you can start restores by right clicking to them.
In addition to what Andreas has said, please be aware that deployment on a Windows Core Edition is not supported for the backup server. Please switch to a Windows machine with Desktop Experience enabled or the installation may fail: https://helpcenter.veeam.com/docs/backu ... erver-core
We don't check this requirement in the installation wizard. However, if you encounter a situation where you require support from us, our support team may instruct you to migrate the server to a Windows Server with Desktop Experience enabled before they can provide assistance.
