retention policy

Post by ortoscale »

Hi.

I've changed retention policy from 10 years to 7 years. Retention should be run at 1:00 AM. I'm checking today but disk consumption for repo is still same as yesterday. I was expecting some space release? Thanks, Matjaž

Hello Matjaž

What kind of repository have you configured? I presume you have local disk repositories (Jet database-based repositories - ADB files).
These databases will not decrease in size even if you lower backup retention. Backups will still be deleted from the database, and the free space within the ADB files will be reused for new backups.
But the database files will not shrink by removing backup data.

Please note that we highly recommend Object Storage repositories for all Service Provider and Enterprise organizations:

i deleted job, backup repo, set retention on NEW backup repo to 5 years, restarted and guess what?
disk got filled again & got folders from 2007-2024 .... would expect them to be like 2019-2024 ... for 5 years retention.

Hi Matjaz,

It doesn't work like that.
Maybe this post will help you a bit: veeam-backup-for-microsoft-365-f47/unde ... 89562.html

Have a look on your SharePoint or OneDrive source. You will be surprised. By default they keep 500 versions of each item. Veeam copies what you have in your source. If you still have versions from 2020, they will be copied too.
