[warn] Failed to update grub in backup

Post by rokko74 »

What does this warning mean?
It is not logged anywhere under /var/log/veeam/* but it's present in the veeam cli:

Hello,
what did support say about that message (case number please)?

I found some support cases that were related to BTRFS, but guessing that kind of message on a forum makes little sense to me.

Best regards,
Hannes

sounds like free version with "best effort" support. As it is only a warning... do you see any issues? Or is everything working?

I've not seen any issues, but i never tried a full machine restore, so I don't know the real impact of the warning.
Anyway I found in Job.log that it is caused by UEFI secure boot:

Code: Select all

Job.log:[22.06.2022 10:28:03.397] <140182325003840> lpbcore| ERR |/usr/sbin/grub2-install: errore: this utility cannot be used for EFI platforms because it does not support UEFI Secure Boot.

Hi,

Would you share your log bundle? Just throw it on a gdrive or something.

Thanks!

Hi all,

I try to resume this tread because recently I spotted the same error on a linux machine (Suse), I've just configured the agent backup for the entire computer leaveing the guest interaction unchecked.

The system is configured with UEFI boot mode but without the Secure Boot enabled.

Veeam Backup server is running the version n°12.2.0.334 but the warning that appears is the same as rokko74 posted two years ago:

...13/01/2025 10:44:15 :: Backed up VGexe 70.8 GB at 440.6 MB/s
10:47:19 Failed to update grub in backup.
10:47:47 Backing up summary.xml
10:47:52 Releasing snapshot 00:21
10:49:25 Full backup created
10:49:37 Network traffic verification detected no corrupted blocks
10:49:37 Processing finished with warnings at 13/01/2025 10:49:37

Unfortunately this Warning does not show indication to resolve the issue and It is not logged anywhere under /var/log/veeam/* :?

Is this a known issue? I cannot find information searching online.

Sincerely

Hello,
can you please provide a support case ID for this issue? If it was a known issue, then it would have been fixed probably after that time (even though updating to 12.3 is the latest version).

Hello,
for future readers: If I understood the case correctly, then the issue was solved by correcting the /etc/fstab file. The /boot/efi partition was not mounted.

Best regards
Hannes
