SharePoint backup running slow - impacting users

Post by sumeet »

Hello,

We have a client complain that due to SharePoint backup that on certain days continue to run during business hours, causes his users/application to have rate limit (or throttled).

To reduce the duration of SharePoint backup job, we have done the following steps:
1. Start the job earlier in the evening 6PM
2. Add 5 additional backup apps to reduce throttling
3. Verified the CPU and memory usage on the O365 server and do not see high usage
4. With version 8 there is no way in UI to control the number of threads - so unsure of what this value is in v8 and if there is a way to control this (I understand increasing this value may not necessarily help and instead increase throttle)

We checked the throttling statistics from last nights backup and the requests for each app is 600K above and throttle is in 200s - so not so much of throttle that is concerning.

We need your help to assist us with any fine tuning (example the thread count) or any other parameter that can assist with improving the performance of backup job so that it finishes between 9PM to 6AM window.

Opened a case #07795063

Hi Sumeet,

Apologies for the late reply.

According to the latest case notes, troubleshooting is still ongoing. For now, it’s best to continue working through your support case. Support has already provided some fine-tuning configuration parameters; please let us know if these resolve the issue for your customer. If not, we may need to consider escalating to R&D.
4. With version 8 there is no way in UI to control the number of threads - so unsure of what this value is in v8 and if there is a way to control this (I understand increasing this value may not necessarily help and instead increase throttle)
Since v8, the maximum number of threads per proxy is dynamically assigned based on factors such as proxy load, number of CPU cores, and other parameters. This maximum value cannot be modified by the customer.

Best,
Fabian
