Feature Request -> PostgreSQL Backup on Windows

Post by ManuelS »

Dear Veeam-Team & Community,

hereby, I request as a feature the development of backing up PostgreSQL + log files on a Windows Server.
Pre and post-freeze scripts are possible, but complicatet and not optimal.
Since it has already been implemented on Linux, only minor adjustments should be needed for Windows...?

I hope the community feels the same and also needs this feature. :-)
hopefully greetings,
Manuel

Hi Manuel,

At first sight, it seems that only "minor" adjustments are needed but I bet that if we start to analyze this logic deeper, we will be very surprised to know how many new things and low-level components are required :) On the other hand, I agree that we already have high-level architecture design and it's much easier to reuse it than to invent something new. However, I believe that the testing of this feature will consume most of the engineering resources: all cases and scenarios that were tested for Linux must be repeated for Windows.

Anyway, your request is noted. Certainly, this idea has value but I cannot comment on ETA and timelines.

Thanks!

Hello,
a new case Veeam Support - Case # 07334491 - How to protect PostgreSQL on Windows OS has been opened by my person. Reason is that I`ve got a coustomer who got approxemadly 20 PostgreeSQL installations runniung on WIndows OS. Now I am still puzzle around how I can protetct his critical datas. May I need to look for another backup vendor.. :-(.
Please push this request. Thanks.

Hello,

My only idea is to try pre-freeze/post-thaw scripts based on pg_start_backup/pg_stop_backup functions. Rest assured, your vote for supporting PostgreSQL on Windows has been counted.

Thanks!

Any news here? Until today, there is only Linux supported (running B&R 12.3 Enterprise Plus) ?!

Hi Marc,

No changes so far, but the request is definitely important. I cannot provide any comments regarding the ETA.

Thanks!

We would also need to be able to easily back up Windows PostgreSQL databases.
That would be appreciated.
